speaking.. intimately

From Brazilians through to Hollywoods and beyond, intimate waxing is becoming much more mainstream, thanks in large part to the rise in popularity of reality TV programmes, where many of the cast members freely discuss their beauty regimes and what goes on ‘down there’. So with pubic topiary seemingly here to stay, are you making the most of your waxing services?

“Intimate waxing is an essential treatment for all beauty therapists as it is one of the most requested treatments in salons,” explains Natacha McMahon, educator for ProSalonDirect.

Yet, despite its popularity, it’s surprising how few people actually understand the differences between the types of wax services available. “Intimate waxing can be confusing, there are so many services – Brazilian, Hollywood, Las Vegas, California etc. it becomes a bit perplexing,” remarks salon owner and trainer, Marie-Louise Coster. “The client also gets confused and sometimes books in for a bikini wax and before you know it she has held her briefs up so high, and asked you to wax so low from the top that you have almost achieved a Brazilian wax!”

“[If this happens] you must be firm with your services, if a client wants more than a standard bikini she must be informed that what she is asking for is a Brazilian, for example, and therefore they must pay for this service,” Marie-Louise adds.

To help address this problem prior to the treatment commencing, ensure you carry out a full consultation to determine the style of wax your client wants and explain any contraindications that may occur once the wax has been completed. If you offer a variety of different waxing styles, a simple treatment menu card may help to clarify

your services and will allow your clients to choose a style that is most appropriate for them.

“One of the most important things

about intimate waxing is to make your client feel comfortable. Clients can be a little nervous and a little private when it comes to intimate waxing,” says Audrey Heffernan of Hennessy Hair & Beauty Supplies. “Try to get your client to relax by having a little chat with them while waxing, this breaks the silence and they get more comfortable with the therapist. If your client is comfortable in your salon they will definitely come back and most importantly they will tell their friends....word of mouth is the best advertising in beauty.”

Essential education Although I’m sure it’s already top of your list, ensuring your clients’ health and safety is also paramount to keeping your clients happy. With a number of stories being published in the media recently querying the hygiene of intimate waxing, it’s more important than ever to dispel any fears your clients may have, by undergoing the correct specialist training before you start offering this type of treatment.

Marie-Louise explains: “I think that the seriousness of intimate waxing is often overlooked, if not ignored, by the therapist (and the salon owner) with this mentality that because you can wax you can carry out intimate waxing. This is completely untrue, the area you are dealing with is extremely delicate and not using the correct procedure can result in damage, pain, bruising and serious discomfort to the client – ultimately this could result in you being sued or damage to your business reputation.”

Fortunately, there are a number of training courses available throughout Ireland to help you to fully understand the intricacies involved with intimate waxing.

Baam Cosmetics know and understand the importance of highly skilled therapists and product quality, and have therefore set up a specialised wax training academy which teaches you the important steps to take before, during and after an intimate waxing treatment.

During the half-day course you will study theory, contraindications and of course technique. From patch testing to

thermal sensitivity testing to ensuring you are aware of the correct after care for your client, all aspects of intimate waxing is covered and there are even specific courses set up to tailor your treatments between male and female clients.

As one of the first companies in Ireland to offer specialised wax training, Carrigg Brady Beauty have trained over 4,000 therapists in the skills of Brazilian, Californian, Playboy and Hollywood bikini lines to date.

The company has also expanded into offering training in bikini colouring and bikini gems through their Funky Bikinis course, and also provide training on using shapes and stencils. Each course takes place over a full day (11am-4pm) on a Sunday and is open to all therapists with a qualification in waxing.

Another intimate waxing training opportunity comes from Hennessy Hair & Beauty Supplies. Their intimate waxing training course is a three-hour workshop where you can learn all the hints and tips to make intimate waxing as comfortable as possible for both you and the client.

ProSalonDirect also offers an intimate waxing course in partnership with The Carlton Institute. This advanced bikini waxing course will teach you the techniques of Brazilian, Hollywood and Californian waxing, and once you successfully complete the Brazilian and Hollywood waxing course you will receive The Carlton Institute diploma, which will enable you to obtain public liability insurance.

One of the key aspects of specialised waxing training is gaining enough product knowledge so you feel confident in applying the hot wax to your clients’ more intimate areas without the worry of injuring your client, especially since different waxing products often have different melting points.

With that in mind, it’s vital to consider what products you’re going to use on your clients well in advance of offering your new services to give you enough time to familiarise yourself with the products in question.
