Britain SNCF expands double-deck TGV fleet F
RENCH National Railways (SNCF) has
exercised an option for an additional 40 TGV Euroduplex trains from Alstom which will be delivered between 2015 and 2019. So far 21 of the 55 trains
from the original 2007 order are in service. They currently operate on high-speed lines radiating from Paris to Luxembourg, the German

cities of Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich, as well as between Frankfurt and Marseille. Each TGV Euroduplex is
200m long and has seats for 560 passengers. The 9.4MW train has a maximum speed of 320km/h and is capable of operating on lines electrified at 25kV ac, 15kV 16.7Hz, and 1.5kV dc, as well as different signalling systems.
CAF reports ƒ50m first half profit
AF announced its first half figures on July 29, which show net profits reached É50m, 6.4% over net sales.

MÁV edges closer to profit H
UNGARIAN State Railways (MÁV) recently
posted positive results after implementing a programme of cost-cutting and rationalisation measures and receiving full compensation from the Hungarian government for operating the network. Overall the group posted
pre-tax profits of É7.8m based on an income of É435m. However, on the down side,

the cost of repaying bank loans obtained between 2002 and 2010 to keep the company going means that the balance
sheets still show a final loss of É22m. Total debt on December 31 2012 stood at É775m, compared with É940m a year earlier, which was achieved without the government taking over any debts of MÁV subsidiaries during 2012. MÁV says it took a number
of steps to improve its results, including eliminating the use of external consultants, not attending conferences, and sourcing vehicle maintenance from within the group.
Hitachi Rail Europe has selected Knorr-Bremse to supply complete braking systems for the 900 new class 800 trains being built under the Intercity Express Programme (IEP). Meanwhile Romag, Britain, has won the contract to supply glass for the trains, which are due to enter service from 2017.
France
Corsican Railways (CFC) has awarded French National Railways’ (SNCF) subsidiary SNCF Partnerships a three- year contract to provide staff training and technical assistance on the island’s 232km metre-gauge network.
Germany
German operator Hessen State Railway (HLB) has issued a call for tender for 20-30 160km/h emus as part of its planned bid to operate train services on the Main-Neckar- Ried network. Should HLB be successful, it will need to introduce the trains into service with the start of the new timetable in December 2017.
Poland
The district court of Warsaw has ordered Poland’s national treasury to compensate state- owned Regional Railways (PR), after the government failed to pay for the operation of inter-regional services between 2006 and 2008. PR is demanding Zlotys 322m ($US 101m) plus interest, although the Court has not yet determined the amount. PR is also seeking Zlotys 358m for services it operated from 2004 to 2006.
Lower Silesian Railways (KD) is inviting bids for a contract worth around Zlotys 181m to supply six three-car and five four-car emus for regional services. Bidding is set to close on September 12.
South Africa
The Alstom-led Gibela consortium has selected a site at Ekurhuleni in the South African province of Gauteng for a Rand 2bn ($US 201m) rolling stock plant, which will assemble commuter trains for Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa). Gibela won a Rand 51bn contract last year to supply 3600 emu vehicles for 10 years from 2015.
Sweden
Infrastructure manager Trafikverket has awarded
Strukton Rail, Netherlands, an É80m contract to maintain 680km of track on the northern part of the Southern Main Line from Malmö to Katrineholm near Stockholm. The five-year contract starts on May 1 2014 and includes an option for a two-year extension.
Switzerland
Rhaetian Railway (RhB) is to invite bids for a new train protection system, with installation scheduled to start at the end of 2014 and be
completed by 2020. Bids of É32-40m are expected. Turkey
Huawei says it has completed GSM-R interoperability tests with the Nokia-Siemens Networks’ (NSN) core network and Huawei Base Station Subsystem on the 328km Eskisehir - Balikesir line where Huawei is installing the telecoms, GSM-R and telephony components of an ERTMS installation being carried out by Alstom. The system is expected to enter service in November 2014.
UAE
Saipem, the lead contractor for Etihad Rail’s development project, has awarded Al- Futtaim Engineering a contract to supply HVAC systems for depots, track and lineside equipment facilities in Mirfah, Abu Dhabi. IRJ
