Feature Sensors & Instrumentation preview

Showcasing sensor technology S

Sensors & Instrumentation, a new, dedicated exhibition and conference, is taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on 25th and 26th September 2013. Here we give you a taster of what you can expect to see...

ensors and Instrumentation remains the only national show dedicated to this market. The free- to-attend exhibition will showcase sensors, test and measurement equip- ment along with a variety of other types of instrumentation. It will also play host to a range of seminars that will cover areas including: automation; cali- bration; condition monitoring; control systems; data acquisition; displays; environmental analysis; flow and level; instrumentation and many more. The exhibition is co-located with six other shows, including Micro | Nano | Mems 2013, The Machine Building Show 2013, TCT Live and Mediplas, making this the biggest industrial event of the year.

Exhibitors at the show include Altheris, Pressure-Sensor.com, Bronkhorst, Hydrotechnik, InfraTec, Michell Instruments, National Instruments, and Yueng Shing. In addi- tion to exhibiting at the show, The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is actively endorsing the event. Pete Moores, business development man- ager, NPL Training, said: “The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is pleased to be exhibiting and presenting at Sensors & Instrumentation 2013. It is a great opportunity for us to meet and network with all the key players in this sector at one event. This year we will be provid- ing a preview of our new Instrumentation and Sensors training course, so delegates can get a taster on the underpinning principles of mea- surement good practice, which can really make a difference within their workplaces, giving them the opportu- nity to generate a return on investment and improve measurement capability.” This year, Altheris will be sharing a stand with Pressure-Sensor.com. Altheris supplies industrial and marine joystick and footpedal controllers in potentiometric and Hall Effect tech- nologies, together with industrial rotary and linear potentiometers. Joysticks for use in hazardous areas are also avail- able. Pressure-Sensor.com designs and manufactures pressure sensors and other sensor-based products. The com- pany offers both standard and custom- designed products. You can see both companies products on stand C10. With the aim of making a trip to the show as worthwhile as possible for the visitor, Bronkhorst will set up a ‘Learning Zone’ on its stand (D10).

Working equipment will be available for a ‘hands on’ approach to learning about the various measurement tech- niques and software tools for PID con- trol, valve/pump steering and thermal mass flow in- situ calibration checking. Bronkhorst’s product range, and its concept of “Total Solutions’ can be found on Stand E14. This September, Hydrotechnik UK and E-Holdings of Germany will announce a joint agreement. merging their UK flowmeter, pump and cou- plings companies to create one com- pany, Flowtechnik. Both companies will be showcasing their products on Stand F14.

Hydrotechnik is the official supplier of Minimess Pressure Test Points, which offers a simple method of accessing low or high pressure sys- tems for pressure testing, oil sampling or gas charging. The company will demonstrate the use of a number of the kits on the stand.

German company InfraTec spe- cialises in products and services in the field of infrared technology. Its pyro- electric infrared detectors are used for high-precision gas analysis as well as for fire and flame detection. Customers in the UK are supported by local dedi- cated subsidiaries. The company’s infrared measurement technology busi- ness unit offers infrared cameras through to turn-key automation solu- tions for infrared thermography. You can find out more on Stand E10. Michell Instruments will launch an oxygen analyser at this year’s show. According to the company, the compact and cost-effective XZR200 offers a good blend of price and performance. It is capable of measuring percentage oxygen to better than 1% of span (or 0.5% O2

tems. The company’s high-speed portable hygrometer, the MDM300, will also be on the stand (B7). At this year’s show, National Instruments will be demonstrating a selection of new products, including LabVIEW 2013, new technologies for embedded control, such as the cRIO- 9068 software-designed controller for the CompactRIO platform, and a family of mobile applications for inter- acting with measurement and control systems from smart phones and tablets. See NI on Stand D7. Yueng Shing, a Taiwanese valve manufacturer has, since 1990, been designing, machining, assembling, inspecting, packing and shipping valves for the worldwide market. Its 3- way ball valve will be displayed on Stand A3.

In addition to the exhibition, there will also be a full seminar programme. On Wednesday 25th September there will be five sessions, including ‘Measuring and Monitoring Remotely’ presented by Kyle Voosen of National Instruments, ‘Advances in Infrared Measurement for Thermal Product Analysis - LIVE’, presented by Nigel Peart from FLIR Systems, ‘Measurement in Advanced Manufacturing’, presented by a speaker from the National Physical Laboratory, and an ‘Overview of Profibus and Profinet - characteristics and features’, given by Andy Verwer, a member of the Profibus Group Committee. Some of the seminars will be repeated on 26th September, with additional presentations from Andrew Mangell from Bronkhorst, who will look at ‘Developments in ultra-low flow cori- olis measurement’, and Ian Ramage, from Techni-Measure, who will speak on the subject of ‘Strain gauge and vibration applications, including wire- less solutions’.

So, all in all, if you use any sort of sensors, instrumentation or test equip- ment in your processes, then a trip to this show is a must.
