FORTUNE® 501-1000 In this year’s survey, another 24 minority counsel-led companies appear in the Fortune® 501-1000, an increase of three from a year ago. T e legal chiefs consist of 17 men and seven women. T e breakdown by race of these 24 GCs is 11 African

Americans, eight Hispanics, and fi ve Asian Americans. T e GCs new to their posts include Tracy Preston

of Neiman Marcus (547), Christian Na of Xylem (612), Kirkland Hicks of Towers Watson (649), and A.Verona Dorch of Harsco (704). Also joining the list are Hoyt Zia of Hawaiian Airlines

(954), Peter Saba of USEC (969), Denise Cade of SunCoke Energy (970), and Albert Liu of VeriFone (984). T eir companies either squeaked into the Fortune® 1000 for the fi rst time or re-entered it.

the nation’s 1,000 most prosperous companies make up just over 7 percent of all these GCs—a rather embar- rassing fi gure because, according to the 2012 American Community Survey, more than 35 percent of the U.S. population is non-Caucasian. Nevertheless, MCCA’s West calls the increase of

six minority GCs from last year’s total of 66 a positive because “any upward movement, by defi nition, has to be considered progress.” Progress, he notes, results from the eff orts of minorities

as well as from white men “who understand the business imperative of ensuring a diverse workforce.” With that in mind, West challenges lawyers and

executives of all racial backgrounds to help diversify the GC ranks. “T e responsibility for progress does not, and should

not, rest solely with women and minority GCs,” he says. “Diverse lawyers cannot do it alone and should not be expected to.”
