(Concord, MA), developer of SpaceClaim 3D direct modeling software. “In 2D, that’s easy. In 3D, that’s harder,” he added. “We have really good support for PMI. You have to have tolerances and other infor- mation to really describe the part. A lot of folks are struggling to implement it in manufacturing because they’re so used to working in 2D. We expect 3D to become more pervasive.” Getting PMI to the manufactur- ing shop floor is critical, along with improving model qual- ity, Courter added. In the new SpaceClaim 2012+ added last fall, SpaceClaim added a host of model healing tools, including the editing of models used in creating finite element analysis (FEA) meshes. “Dirty geometry is a really big problem out there,” said Courter. “Manufacturing engineers are the most affected by it. One error in geometry can cause you to crash a spindle and cost $20,000.” In CAM software, the lower prices of versatile multitasking machines (MTM) in the machine- tool world have driven many new buyers into that segment of the market, where multifunction five-axis machines can machine many sides of a part in a single setup. This allows manufacturers to greatly reduce time-consuming and costly setup operations prior to machining complex parts. With the increasing popularity of MTMs, many CAM software packages now offer the ability to program extremely complex ma- chine tools with multiple spindles

and multiple turrets, thereby enabling manufacturers to save money by eliminating time-consuming, costly machine setups. This “done-in-one” approach allows shops to compete much more effectively with lower- cost off-shore manufacturers. MTMs have steadily fallen in price to the point where many more shops can afford the technol-
