Following his high school season, Chavez entered the FILA Junior Nationals in April. Still a high school junior, Chavez was
one of the younger competitors in the field which included many wrestlers already competing at the collegiate level. Chavez battled his way to a third-place
finish in the Greco-Roman tournament before finishing in fourth place in the freestyle field. “I’ve learned some things from my coaches at Suples that I wouldn’t learn anywhere else,” Chavez said. “I got a lot stronger as the year went on and gained more endurance and put on some mus- cle.” After his terrific finish in both styles at
the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron, Chavez will set his sights on the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D. in July. “I hope to win both styles, that’s what
I’m training for,” Chavez said. “I’m hoping to do well there and then at Worlds in August. The World Championships will be dif-
ferent than any tournament I’ve wrestled yet.”

leges talking to him about his future plans, but he has not made any decision yet on where he chooses to attend col- lege. “A couple colleges are showing some
interest so hopefully I’ll pick the right place,” Chavez said. “Right now I’m
thinking about pursuing a degree in busi- ness or engineering. It’s important to me to find a good balance between school and wrestling. “So when I graduate if I want to wrestle
