Greco-Roman teams battle during international event
By Richard Immel LA GRANGE, Ill. - The 2013 Jacob Curby Cup provided an exhilarating day of Greco-Roman competition with a dose of international flair. The Curby Cup was comprised of four teams: the United
States of America, Serbia, Hungary and Lithuania. All four teams competed in a dual format tournament with each team facing every team once on May 11. The United States, Hungary and Lithuania each posted a 2-1
record on the day creating a three-way tie for first place. The first criteria for determining the team champion in this situation is the total number of individual matches won, placing Hungary at the top of the leaderboard having won 15 total matches. The United States came in second place having won 11 matches, leaving Lithuania in third place with only nine individ- ual victories. Serbia came in fourth place after posting a 0-3 record in the tournament. U.S. Greco-Roman coach Steve Fraser stressed the value
and importance of competing in this event. "Overall, I thought this day was a great day for us. We got
some great matches in and all three of these teams are very strong, so we had to wrestle hard to beat Hungary and Serbia," Fraser said. "This is just a wonderful event for us, having three international matches here today really helps us prepare for the Worlds." The U.S. team was highlighted by Spenser Mango and
Jordan Holm who both finished undefeated at the Curby Cup. Mango started off the competition by defeating 2012 Olympic
bronze medalist Peter Modos of Hungary 1-0, 1-0. "I've seen him at so many tournaments since I've started wrestling Greco and I never got to wrestle him until today and it was a nice win for me," Mango said. "It's like getting a little tro- phy but you know you just have to keep working because when it counts is at the Worlds and Olympics." Mango also recorded victories over Nikola Markovic (Serbia)
and Justas Petravičius (Lithuania). Ben Provisor went 2-1 on the day losing a close decision to
Valdemaras Venckaitis of Lithuania, however Provisor did take home the first place trophy for the 74 kg weight class despite the loss. Hometown hero Joe Betterman secured two victories. USA vs Hungary
