NS and SNCB intend to step up the frequency of the substitute conventional service from The Hague to Brussels from eight trains per day to 12 by December. There are also plans to increase Amsterdam - Brussels Thalys services from 10 to 12 trains per day, but while Thalys International has agreed to the proposals in principle, it cannot say when the additional services will start because there is insufficient capacity in the current train fleet.


Arriva to operate The Hague - Brussels services

Brazil


The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has begun public consultation on the planned 551km line from Rio de Janeiro to Vila Velha in the state of Espirito Santo. The $US 1.65bn project is expected to take five years to complete.


Britain


Virgin Rail Group says it is preparing enforcement action against infrastructure manager Network Rail (NR) for failing to achieve contractual performance targets on the West Coast Main Line in recent months. Punctuality on the Inter-City West Coast ICWC franchise was 85.7% for the four-week period ending May 25 against a target of 88%. According to Virgin, more than 70% of delays were infrastructure-related.


Costa Rica


Suburban services have been reinstated on the 21km line between San Jose and Cartago, following a modest investment of Colon 3.5bn ($US 6.9m). The line has five intermediate stations and services are operated by a fleet of six dmus acquired from former Spanish metre-gauge operator Feve.


Czech Republic


Open-access long-distance passenger operator Leo Express announced on June 24 that it has carried more than 400,000 passengers in the six months since the launch of its full timetable on January 18. Leo Express says it is achieving average load factors of more than 70% on its Prague - Ostrava - Bohumin services.


Germany


DB Networks introduced new supplements to track access charges on June 1 for wagons that are not fitted with quieter composite brake blocks or disc brakes. Initially a 1% additional charge will be applied to trains that do not have at least 80% of axles equipped with quiet brakes. A bonus scheme has also been launched to incentivise wagon
