B I write this having just enjoyed a lovely sunny three days over the bank

holiday – rather an unusual experience! I took advantage of the good weather to work in my garden and also enjoyed visiting an Open Garden too. Whoever thought up the idea of opening private gardens to raise money for charity deserves a medal! As well as an excellent way to raise much needed funds, having the opportunity to see many of our beautiful private gardens gives such an enormous amount of pleasure to visitors. The garden I visited was raising money for a local hospice (it made over £400 in one afternoon!) and was a beautiful ‘eco’ garden with bee hives, bird feeders and nesting boxes, hedgehog shelters and even an insect hotel. It was full of beautiful plants and served excellent tea and home made cakes. What better way to spend a sunny afternoon? I returned home to my own garden to finish planting my bedding plants and runner beans. Gardening is a great creative activity, keeps the body fit and is chance to enjoy the simple pleasure of reconnecting with the earth. Gardening as a leisure activity is more popular than ever in these times of

economic difficulties. More people are turning to gardening as an affordable hobby, and using the garden as a social venue for barbecues, garden parties and children’s activities is also on the increase. This is driving investment in maintenance tools and garden landscape such as patios, decks and ponds. There is also growing investment in such articles as garden furniture, fountains, garden art and lighting. Programmes such as Ground Force and Home Front in the Garden have given a wealth of ideas on how to transform the garden into an outside liveable space. Here at ToolBUSINESS+HIRE Magazine we recognise the enormous potential of the garden equipment market and many of the retail outlets on our mailing list now do a brisk trade in these products. Therefore we have decided to run a garden special in our features list for the next issue in June to give all our advertisers the chance to reach out to this lucrative market. If you wish to take advantage of this, contact Christine or Belinda who will be happy to help. In this month’s features we have a building and construction special including hire, safety and protective equipment and the

usual product and company news. Peter Brett has written reviews on a pressure washer from Toolstream, a package of products from Metabo including a cordless drill, an impact driver, new 5.2A.h battery packs and a site light and stand, some tool bits from Europa, tape measures from Advent and a Draper Oscillating Multi –Tool kit. Christine and Belinda visited the new PlantWorx Exhibition at Stoneleigh Park, a new event for the working construction

industry. It was a resounding success with more than 11,000 visitors. See pages 20 to 22 for the review of this biennial event. For more information on all the products and news in the magazine, visit www.toolbusiness.co.uk where live links take you

to company websites and easy access to email to request more information. Here’s hoping we have many more sunny weekends to enjoy this summer!
