SME Launches New Identity A

s part of a major rebranding effort, SME, one of the most prolific and trusted sources of manufacturing knowledge, will no longer be known as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a decision that reflects the organization’s expanding role and influence throughout the advanced manufacturing industry.

SME, which will now be known by its acronym alone, is already a leader in many areas of manufacturing, including professional development, events, publishing, community- building, and promoting manufacturing education. We will continue playing a key role in advancing the field of manufac- turing and attracting future generations.

The decision to position SME more broadly than “manu- facturing engineering” reflects an evolution that already has occurred within the organization, as SME is now relevant among all type of manufacturing professionals, from welders and machinists to researchers and engineers. As part of the multi-year, research-led rebranding effort, SME also is launching a new logo and tagline that debuted at SME’s annual conference gala in Baltimore on June 3.

and CEO. “Our audiences see us as a credible authority, an inclusive community and a provider of solutions that is moving the manufacturing industry forward. We needed our

brand to express those vital ideas as we move boldly into a bright future.”

SME will continue its successful efforts in areas such as: • Professional Development. SME provides a wide range of professional development tools through its ToolingU subsidiary, certification programs, technical publications and other educational efforts.

• Events. With an ever-growing schedule of shows and conferences each years, such as the popular FABTECH and WESTEC events, SME has long been a leader in bringing manufacturing professionals together and promoting new technologies.

• Publishing. Manufacturing Engineering Media is an expanding enterprise with a monthly magazine, industry yearbooks and a full range of digital media that deliver useful content to more than 100,000 manufacturing professionals.

SME’s new logo features two interacting shapes that rep-

resent technological achievement and its positive impact on society. The logo also pays homage to the history of SME with a subtle reference to the previous logo, which is contained in the white or “negative” space between the two “arcs of progress.” SME is promoting its inclusive mindset with the new tagline, “Making the future. Together.” “The evolution of our brand signifies a momentous point in our history,” said Mark Tomlinson, SME Executive Director

• Community-building. Through membership in our organization, manufacturing students and professionals participate in a supportive network where ideas and knowledge are shared and careers are developed.

• Promoting Manufacturing Education. Through our SME Education Foundation, SME plays an active role in attracting future generations to the field of manufacturing, supporting manufacturing education and generally promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). SME is rolling out its new brand throughout the year. ME
