Leading the Way
Today, there’s so much focus on clean energy, it’s not surprising that SME has chosen energy manufacturing as one of its industry focus areas. We oſten hear about the ongoing Keystone pipeline debate, renewable energy regulation and the ever- popular discussion on reducing our dependence on oil consumption. While the controversies and politics rage on, according to some recent data, clean energy and clean transportation projects were expected to create 110,000 jobs in 2012. Nationwide, clean transportation projects led the job growth last year, followed
by clean power generation, manufacturing and energy-efficiency projects. As a region, the Southeast led the United States in manufacturing-related clean energy job announcements, with more than 13,700 jobs announced last year, accounting for about 80% of the nation’s total. Solar, advanced vehicles and wind energy were the leading clean energy manufacturing industries in the Southeast. Because clean energy is such an important issue, not only from an environmental
standpoint, but also from a manufacturing perspective, SME has continued to evolve its products and services so that we remain relevant to our members and custom- ers in this industry. For example, in 2012, one of SME’s newest events, Mfg4, was launched. Mfg4 encompasses aerospace, defense, medical and energy. Te energy industry track at Mfg4 2012 included presentations on abrasive waterjet machin- ing, coating technology, battery manufacturing and additive manufacturing from various companies and institutions, including Omax Corp., Carestream Tollcoating, Oakridge National Labs and GE Global Research Center to name just a few. In addition, one of SME’s longstanding biannual events, HOUSTEX, saw some
resurgence this year, increasing its exhibit space by 50% and drawing a much larger crowd of attendees. Part of the focus of this year’s event was how US manufacturers can compete effectively by offering high-skilled, high-wage jobs, and how the US government is continuing to invest in manufacturing research by funding key efforts in areas such as the joining of metals and composites and in lightweight materials. While SME’s event platform offerings continue to multiply, Manufacturing
Engineering Media has also increased its visibility in the energy manufacturing arena when it launched its new Web site,
www.manufacturingengineeringmedia. com. Te Web site now includes 22 Manufacturing Content Channels, one of which focuses on energy. Helping to feed the content on the Web site is a new eNewsletter—Energy Manufacturing. Tis monthly newsletter chronicles the latest news on innovations and technologies in the oil and gas industry, as well as the geothermal, solar, nuclear and wind sectors. If you’re not a subscriber, or haven’t visited ME Media’s Web site, I encourage you to do so. And last but not least, a big part of how SME shares the most relevant and timely
information on energy manufacturing is through the pages of this yearbook. What the energy manufacturing industry and this yearbook will show is that it’s an excit- ing time to be in manufacturing. I wish all of you continued success in your energy manufacturing endeavors.
