‘Keep feet ‘Fit’

t this time of year, I usually offer up a prayer to the Gods for sunshine in the month of May. After a freezing cold, seemingly endless winter, with snow still on the ground in April, footwear

retailers really need a good summer to get back on track – who wants to buy sandals in the rain! Hopefully, hard-pressed retailers will be able to pick up a few

money-saving tips in these tough economic times from a new series, starting in this edition of Footwear Today. Our Financial Plumber - a.k.a. David Gummers of F. Dickinson Footwear, Ulverston, Cumbria - advises retailers how to plug the leaks in their finances by understanding their profit and loss account. Retailers can also pick up a few tips about how to promote their

business in Misfit, on page 10. Your shop window is the best advert you can have – a good window should stop the consumer in their tracks and the best way to do this is with props that have nothing to do with shoes. Put right prop in your window and sit back and watch the crowds grow… Our publisher has taken Misfit’s lead and has announced a National Shoe Shop Window Dressing Award for the Footwear Industry Awards next February.

First prize is a lovely holiday for two..... come on

someone sponsor this event, it will great for your brand? Meanwhile, check out our Editor’s Choice Holiday Kit pages on

pages 20-21….for a stunning array of the latest summer styles, especially selected for you by yours truly. Many of these styles offer good margins.

National Shoe Fitting Week, launched under the banner ‘Keep feet ‘Fit’ on March 25th 2013, received a warm welcome from the footwear trade. Laura West, SSF Secretary, told Footwear Today Magazine: “Lots of shops benefitted and achieved tremendous coverage locally. Several appeared on local radio and got their local media involved - which is all good. For the first of, hopefully, many National Shoe Fitting Weeks and only £2,000 spent (which is a lot to the SSF, but nothing in real terms), it was a really good start and we need to use any feedback from members for next year. “This will now be an annual event taking place the week prior to

Easter - from 14th April in 2014 - and the best way to help ourselves as an industry is to join in and make every effort to shout about it. We are hoping the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists will join us in 2014 and that more suppliers will do their bit to help promote the event on behalf of their stockists." In this edition, we feature a snapshot of some of the many exciting

activities that were organised around the country and helped mark National Shoe Fitting Week 2013. I’m now calling for your April Best Sellers for the June edition. Independent footwear retailers interested in joining our Best Sellers Panel, please drop me an email or give me a call on 01622 862962 and I’ll answer any queries. In return for your help with Best Sellers, we promise to feature your shop in a double page spread in Footwear Today Magazine, at no cost to you. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Cheryl Taylor, Editor DL 01622 862962
