GE Aviation Wins Award for Health Management Technology

GE Aviation was selected for the Game-Changing Technology Implementation award this week at the 2013 Manufacturing Leadership Summit (ML100). GE received the award for its Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) technology and service that reduces delays, cancellations and unscheduled maintenance as initially implemented on the G650 business jet aircraft.

“This technology fundamentally changes how aircraft fleets are managed,” said Mark Thomson, program manager, Integrated Vehicle Health Management for GE Aviation. “The system connects an aircraft to its support via a series of real-time links, provides insight and fleet context on difficult-to-solve issues and provides a single version of the events used between the aircraft manufacturer, the operator, and even the aircraft’s supply base.” GE’s Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) technology continuously manages

and analyzes data throughout the flight creating a comprehensive set of health information for the engines, avionics, power, cabin and other aircraft systems. “On a given day, average responses to maintenance issues change into smart, proactive, and timely solutions,” added Thomson. Wireless connectivity links every aircraft to a Ground Services Network (GSN) providing a web-based service that delivers a real time picture of aircraft health that the operator can access 24/7 from anywhere in the world. The system is seamlessly integrated with customers’ product support and maintenance systems to enable unprecedented capability to enhance dispatch reliability and availability.

The IVHM technology dates back to 1991 when GE developed the world’s first certified Health and Usage Monitoring System, HUMS, for helicopters. GE has recorded and analyzed in excess of two-million flight hours of data. The system is provided from GE facilities in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Southampton, UK.

Western Aircraft Announces Expansion Plans

Western Aircraft is embarking on a facility expansion plan. Two new buildings totaling 26,000 square feet are being added on the company’s 18-acre leasehold. The buildings will hold an expanded parts facility and support shops for Western Aircraft’s services operation. “We are very excited to increase our footprint here in Boise,” said president of Western Aircraft, Jeff Mihalic. “This expansion is driven in large part by the 2012 sales tax exemption bill passed by the Idaho legislature as well as by our expanded capabilities and market reach.” Mihalic noted that 95 percent of Western Aircraft’s customers are based outside of the state of Idaho, flying their aircraft into Boise from as far away as Philadelphia and San Antonio. The company currently boasts approximately 95,000
