Elaine Theisen Fund created U.S. Figure Skating has announced

the creation of the Elaine Theisen Dia- mond Ice FSC Fund for Special Olympic and Therapeutic Skating (Elaine Theisen Fund).

Established through the generosi- Elaine Theisen

ty of Diamond Ice FSC in memory of for- mer club offi cer Elaine Theisen, the Elaine Theisen Fund will pro- vide fi nancial support to eligible member clubs and programs that wish to expand or enhance opportunities for Special Olym- pic and Therapeutic Skating participants in their communities. There are nearly two dozen active or establishing Special

Olympic and/or Therapeutic Skating programs in U.S. Figure Skating membership. The Elaine Theisen Fund hopes to grow this number by en-

couraging the development of new programs while also encour- aging existing programs to develop new and creative ideas to promote Special Olympic and Therapeutic Skating. U.S. Figure Skating will award two grants for the 2013–14

membership year to clubs and/or programs that eff ectively demonstrate how support from the Elaine Theisen Fund would be used to benefi t the program, club and community and at- tract, engage and encourage new generations of fi gure skaters. The inaugural application process opens June 1, 2013, and

will close on August 30, 2013. Application instructions can be found at www.usfi gureskating.org.

ents, coaches and star-studded faculty were in Charleston, S.C., April 19–21, for the third annual U.S. Figure Skating National Program Components Camp. The national training camp, open to athletes who competed at regional and sectional qualifying events, featured approximately 16 hours of instruction that focused on improving a skater’s program components mark. Athletes were assigned to one of eight beach-themed groups based on skat-

ing skill, age and discipline. Each group learned a program throughout the two-day camp to perform at the fi nal exhibition at the Carolina Ice Palace. For the fi rst time, faculty members participated in the exhibition with the skat-

ers. 2013 U.S. Championships competitors and Athlete Advisory Committee (AAC) members Douglas Razzano and Alex Johnson participated in the boys’ group per- formance, while Olympian Mark Ladwig and Athlete Development Committee Chair Ben Miller performed with the pairs and dance group. While the skaters worked hard at the rink, more than 100 parents took advantage

of the parents’ track that included 12 classes designed to educate them on fi gure skating and supporting their skaters. New topics this year included sports science, balancing skating and school, and Zumba.
