Retro RC Winder, Stooge and Caddies

Here the large PS6 sheet is placed over the large sun gear (above left). Then the outer ring gear and the center drive gear is placed over that (above right). Despite the lubricating properties of the polyethylene, some silicone spray

(below left) really helps eliminate any friction. The locknut for the winder handle nests in the drive plate (below center). The 90° bend in the winding hook nests in the output gear slot (below right). Just a bit of thick CA keeps it in place.

idea to round the edges of the pins so they guide into the holes more easily. One thing Mark told me was that these pins need to be vertical, and not just sort of.

Assembly is pretty straightforward. Thin cyano and some thick stuff once in a while make it go quickly. Something that also helped assembly go quicker was a Dremel Moto-Tool with a cutoff wheel. This was used to file the notch in the brass sleeve for the winding hook. The instructions say to

file a notch at the end of the brass sleeve where the 90-degree bend of the winding hook will seat.

Actually filing the tube without resorting

to a vise and carefully sawing away with a jeweler’s file seemed a little tedious. With the Dremel tool, the operation was over in a matter of seconds, with a perfectly formed notch, the right length. One of the final steps in the assembly is screwing the planet drive plate to the base

assembly. This planet drive plate has two planet gears that go over the spring steel pins. To assemble this planet drive plate more easily I held it inverted (gears facing up) while I positioned the handle/base plate over it. With only a minor amount of fiddling everything finally meshed and the planet drive plate was screwed into the base. Two things, besides accurate assembly, are key to the proper operation of the winder. First is that 90-degree bend in the

All parts of the Retro RC winding stooge are ¹⁄₈ Baltic ply (above left), with the exception of the bamboo rod. These “mushroom” plates are being spaced to ¹⁄₈

inch (above center) with the help of a stooge part. Wedges fasten the wheel chock plate (above right) on the stooge base plate or on the extension.
