Converted Tee Saves 28 Weeks of Labor


Cast Component: Side Outlet Reducing Tee.


Material: 65-45-12 ductile iron. Process: Sand casting. Weight: 4.5 lbs.


Application: Coal mine conveyor belt fi re suppression system.

Customer: Pillar Innovation, Grantsville, Md.


• The original fabricated design used a specially fabricated tee, grooved by thread, a threaded nipple and a reducing threaded tee, all assembled by hand (with occasional leaks). The cast conversion was developed to reduce cost, labor assembly time and potential leaks.


• The cast tee provides consistent assembly and end-to-end dimensions. Pillar saved an estimated 8 min. of labor per piece. With 7,000 to 10,000 pieces used per year, the customer calcu- lates around 28 weeks of man hours saved per year.
