Watertight nano-connectors pass shock, vibration and immersion testing
Ruggedised ultra-miniature circular connectors are increasingly being used within medical, commercial and military applications and to ensure their integrity, Omnetics is using gold plated contacts that are polarized and shrouded by a unique liquid crystal polymer insulator. The over-molded shells have been specifically designed to assist in pre- mating alignment, as well as, holding the connectors securely in place to guarantee a water-tight seal. The cable jackets, strain relief system and cable surfaces are specifically designed to have a good tactile feel and maintain flexibility while providing a secure grip. Connector insulator sizes of 6, 11, and 16 positions are available with cables pre- attached.
Connector body formats include in-line and
protruding panel mount shells. Custom wire or cable designs are available as well as custom over-molded handles, and shapes to meet a designer’s specific applications. The new SureCon 360 connectors from Omnetics have been designed with pin and socket elements positioned on 25 one-thousands of an inch spacing to reduce size and weight by as much as 3 times that of the conventional micro-sized circular connectors. Typically, the installed wiring is thirty-two gauge standard Teflon insulated copper wire and can carry up to 1 ampere of current per line. Nano-circular connector use is rapidly expanding as chip voltage and current ratings are downsizing. Applications range in the military sector from portable equipment on foot-soldiers

and unmanned aerial vehicles to medical probes, sensors, and detectors. These kinds of applications prefer the smaller connectors on the cables, which are then routed to other tactical or measurement equipment. Robotics and prosthetic devices also use the nano-sized connectors in-line at key joint and bending positions to assist in signal transmission as well as allow quick repair and replacement of the extended portions of the instrument. SureCon offers designs, using high-speed cable that includes shielding and drain wire systems, similar to surfire cabling, to help reduce EMI and provide better transmission of differential signal pairs used in fast transfer of digital images. The custom designer can also benefit from Omnetics’ Solid Works design service to receive customised images to fit his application specific needs.

AVX Corporation has introduced a new open- ended card edge connector specifically designed to provide lighting engineers with a miniature, cost-effective, and high density pin-count solution for use in linear LED strip lighting. Designed without plastic end-walls to minimise length, the new 00-9159 Series connectors feature a double-sided configuration for increased pin-count density, a central keying rib for strength and alignment, and a tin-to-tin contact interface for financial economy. Measuring a mere 1mm in length per number of contacts, the 00-9159 Series is available with 4, 6, 8, or 10 contact positions and has a voltage rating of 300VAC. With contacts on both the top and bottom of the PCB, AVX’s 00-9159 Series connectors provide a high pin-count density in a small footprint, as well as enable enhanced flexibility when mixing and matching power and signal lines. The series also features a centre keying rib, which ensures both proper mating alignment and functional PCB location, and high current capabilities. The 4- and 6-position connectors are rated for 3A and the 8- and 10-position
connectors are rated for 2.5A. Supporting standard 1.6mm PCB thicknesses, the Series are rated for use in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +125°C and featuring a durability rating of five cycles. In addition to linear LED strip lighting, 00-9159 Series open- ended card edge connectors are also ideal for use in both commercial and industrial coplanar and extended card applications.

New multi-source agreement (MSA) launches to advance 400 Gbps copper cable and fibre optic transceiver markets
Five leading global companies intend to enter into a multi-source agreement (MSA) to create a 400 Gbps Form-factor Pluggable (CDFP) industry consortium that will define a transceiver module/plug mechanical form factor and a host-board electrical edge connector and cage. The companies involved include: • Avago Technologies (

• JDS Uniphase Corporation (
www.jdsu.com)
• Molex Incorporated (
www.molex.com)
• TE Connectivity (
www.te.com) The consortium is intended to specify and encourage the development and commercialisation of a 400 Gbps hot pluggable module that integrates 16 transmit and 16 receive channels supporting passive and active copper cables, and active optical modules. “This highly integrated transceiver module is expected to enable network equipment manufacturers to implement 400 Gbps solutions with high port density and increased system data throughput,” explained Scott Kipp, senior technologist, Brocade. “The CDFP MSA group intends to

make specification details available to promote industry-wide adoption of compatible high density products.” The CDFP MSA participants want to be
able to provide products that are mechanically and electrically interchangeable. The project scope will specify the electrical interfaces, optical interfaces and mechanical interfaces, which may include optical connector and mating fibre optic cable plug, electrical connector, guide rail, front panel and host PCB layout requirements. Additionally, the MSA specification is expected to include thermal, electromagnetic and electrostatic discharge design recommendations.
“The collaboration is committed to enhancing customer choice and assuring interoperation and interchangeability by establishing multiple compatible sources of front panel, hot pluggable, 16-channel 400 Gbps modules that will essentially allow the entire copper cable and fibre optics transceiver market to grow more rapidly,” said Scott Sommers, group product manager, Molex.
Requests for additional information and queries should be directed to the consortium website.

for three power contacts and a protective earth contact (Han Q 3/0) or four power contacts (Han Q 4/0), giving them the highest power capacity in this compact industrial connector family. Clearance and creepage distances in the Han 3/0 allow a 400 V rated voltage, which increases to 830 V with the Han Q 4/0. Both connectors have similar load current capacities of approximately 40 A with an ambient temperature of 40°C and a connection wire gauge of 4 mm2
. Because connectors with
standard Han C contacts can be used with a wire gauge of up to 10 mm2
, currents of over 80 A
are possible, but in these cases the diameter of the cable entry needs to be taken into account. Both connectors are suited to use in industrial
environments. The Han Q 3/0 with protective earth contact is designed for 3-phase earthed networks and is typically used in three-phase motors. It can fit all housings in the 3A size, including all plastic and metal varieties and EMC
protective housings, as well as the extremely robust HPR and stainless steel housings. The Han Q 4/0 comes with four power contacts and is used with equipment such as ventilators, fans or extraction units. In these applications, it offers the potential to reduce costs because two devices can be connected with one connector. The Han Q 4/0 is also suitable for DC applications in conjunction with 3A size plastic housings.

Rutronik stocking board-to-board- connector from FCI
Rutronik is now stocking FCI’s hermaphroditic board-to-board connector the RotaConnect that can be rotated to any angle between +90° and -60°. The device has a unique header contact design that contains a coined hole enables this 150 degree rotation.
The RotaConnect connector offers significant design flexibility as the same connector is capable of providing perpendicular, co-planar or angled interconnect solutions. The hermaphroditic connector, which mates to itself, can also be placed anywhere on the PCB, further expanding design options. Due to a dual beam spring contact design, the connector delivers high- performance and reliability. Designed with a passive latch for housing retention, the rotatable board-to-board connector's housing protects the pins and prevents mis-mating. During reflow soldering, the connector does not 'float'. Available with optional side brackets for increased PCB retention and optional pegs for
location, the connector supports multiple mating and un-mating directions with Y and Z directional floating allowance. Featuring a 3.00mm pitch, these high power board-to-board connectors are available in positions ranging from 2 up to 14.
The RotaConnect is rated up to 5A with an operating voltage of 125V AC and a temperature range of -40°C up to +125°C. Therefore, it is ideal for demanding applications like control boards, sensors, actuators, rigid LED strips and automotive electronics.
