500W, 1/2U format, baseplate-cooled power supply units from Powerstax

Powerstax plc, a specialist provider of highly optimised power sources, has introduced the FAC series of baseplate-cooled power modules with a ultra-slim 1/2U height form factor. Featuring power factor correction, these compact (2.2cm x 17.5cm x 18.0cm) units can deliver a 500W output from an 85VAC to 264VAC input. They are offered in 12VDC, 15VDC, 24VDC, 28VDC and 48VDC output options, with custom voltages available. Hold- up capability is built in to the unit, along with a convenient H15 connector to allow hot-swap redundancy.

Designed for cold wall mounting, these modules are designed to be used in applications where environmental considerations or space constraints mean that little (or no) forced air cooling can be provided. These include outdoor signage and telecommunications infrastructure (such as street cabinets, pico cell base stations, wireless access points, etc.), and industrial power systems.

Both IEC60950-1 and EN 61000 compliant,

Excelsys Xgen configurable power supply offers 1 x MOPP from input to earth

Excelsys Technologies Xgen Medical Range of power supplies has been enhanced to include 1 x MOPP (Means of Patient Protection) approval from input to earth (ground) for patient connected equipment. Furthermore the improved products now allow customers to isolation test self- configured power supplies from input to output to 6kV DC.

The enhancements include

the series operates within a temperature range spanning from -20°C to +100°C. A fan cooled version with a 1U height is also available for rack or system mounting, which is environmentally sealed and has a built-in heat sink. To increase power output levels, units can be paralleled by a simple single wire connection. This allows multi- kW systems to be realised.

NXP delivers best-in-class MOSFET solution for PoE applications

NXP Semiconductors has launched a new family of NextPower Live MOSFETs designed specifically for Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. The new devices – the PSMN040-100MSE and the PSMN075-100MSE provide twice the level of inrush current capability of existing offerings, making them suitable for high-power PoE architectures (30W and above) such as PoE+, UPoE and LTPoE++.

PoE is becoming an increasingly popular way of powering devices through an Ethernet cable/port rather than using a separate mains supply. Initially used for low-power devices such as VoIP phones, new approaches including UPoE and LTPoE++ are enabling higher power devices such as large LCD PoS displays and 3G/4G wireless access points to run at up to 100 W. However, in such high power environments, the

power sourcing equipment (PSE) – such as a network router, switch or midspan – can suffer serious damage if a short circuit or fault in the powered device (PD) causes a power surge that is not controlled in time. These new, higher power systems are placing

greater demands on the MOSFETs used to supply and protect such equipment. NXP’s new NextPower Live PoE MOSFETs have a safe operating area (SOA) that is twice as capable as existing solutions, providing higher levels of protection and system reliability. The new PoE devices also offer very low RDS(on) and come in the ultra-reliable LFPAK33 package, which is footprint-compatible with similar devices.

output. Carrying full UL60601-1 and EN60601-1 3rd edition approvals, the range provides low leakage current (less than 150µA available) as well as meeting the stringent creepage and clearance requirements of medical equipment. Dielectric testing is a simple method of verifying the adequacy of electrical insulation to withstand the peak voltages that can occur during transient events. However this can be a destructive test and is generally categorized as a “Type test”. “Type tests” are investigations carried out by Safety Agencies and are intended to prove that the construction of the power supply meets the requirements dictated by the relevant safety standard. However, Reinforced (primary to secondary) Insulation cannot be tested without over-stressing basic insulation on the end product and it is because of this the agencies allow manufacturers to test reinforced insulation separately. In order to meet customer demand to be able to verify this as part of their production process Excelsys has released this enhanced range of medically approved Xgen power supplies. This product has been specifically designed to withstand the DC peak equivalent of the 4kV AC isolation test from primary to secondary. (Note: Refer directly to UL60950-1, C5.2.2 or UL60601- 1 2nd Edition Section 20.4 or IEC60601-1 3rd

Edition Section 8.8.3 for more information). By selecting this Excelsys product range customers can test in-situ with a DC voltage of 6kV applied across the isolation barrier of a fully assembled power supply. Excelsys will continue to carry out 100% production testing of all primary to secondary isolation barriers on all Xgen products. This will directly address the growing demand from customers to verify the isolation barrier on their application without causing an electrical stress on internal components. The Excelsys Xgen series of medically

approved power supplies can provide up to 1340W watts of output power with DC voltages in user selectable combinations from 1.5V to 58V each with individual output control. The series has leakage current of under 300µA, and the option of less than 150µA. All outputs are fully floating allowing series/parallel connection of all multiple outputs for non-standard voltages or higher output current. Xgen power supplies may be connected in parallel for higher system power requirements and a 5V bias standby voltage is provided on all models. Sample products are available immediately

and production quantities are available from May 2012.

Synchronous step-down regulator delivers 1A requiring only 3.5µA of quiescent current

Low profile surface mount power inductors suit high frequency switching applications

Murata has unveiled the Murata Power Solutions 3000A and 3000B series of low profile power inductors for use in noise reduction circuits of high frequency and high current switching power supplies, DC-DC converters and voltage regulator modules.

The 3000A series is available with 80, 100, 150 or 200 nH inductance values. Maximum rated peak current is 57 Amps for the 80 nH device. Typical Rdc is only 0.20 mOhm across the series. The 3000B series has inductance values of 85, 100, 120, 150 or 200 nH and a maximum rated current of 78 A for the 85 nH inductor. Rdc is also extremely low and is typically 0.29 mOhm. Using a low-loss core material, combined with low series resistance (Rdc), gives the inductors a high overall efficiency. The low inductance values suit high frequency applications while their compact low profile dimensions, 7.1 x 7.0 x 4.96

mm for the 3000A series, are ideal for designs where available board space is at a premium. Both series are available in surface mount packages suiting high volume manufacturing.

The new LT3621 from Linear Technology is a high efficiency, 17V input capable synchronous buck regulator that delivers up to 1A of continuous output current to outputs as low as 0.6V. Synchronous rectification delivers efficiencies as high as 95% while Burst Mode operation requires only 3.5µA of no load quiescent current. The LTC3621 switches at a fixed 1MHz frequency whereas the LTC3621-2 switches at 2.25MHz. Their constant frequency, current- mode architecture minimises switching noise while offering very fast line and load transient response. The LTC3621/-2 operates from an input voltage range of 2.7V to 17V, making it suitable for single or dual cell Li-Ion applications as well as 12V intermediate bus and automotive systems. The combination of its 2mm x 3mm DFN or MSOP-8 package high switching frequency and tiny, low cost capacitors and inductors ensures a highly compact solution footprint. The LTC3621/-2’s 60ns minimum on-time enables it to step-down 16V inputs to 2.5V with a 2.25MHz switching frequency without pulse

skipping, as a result it can be used in automotive applications that must keep switching noise above the AM radio band. It’s 3.5µA quiescent current make it suited for always-on applications requiring maximum battery run time. For applications that require the lowest possible noise, the LTC3621/-2 can be configured to run in pulse-skipping or forced continuous mode, reducing noise and potential RF interference. Additional features include a power good voltage monitor, internal compensation and thermal protection.
