Best-selling author James Wong will be headlining the HTA National Plant Show seminars (catch him at 10am on 25 June). A Kew-trained botanist, BBC science presenter and obsessive foodie grower who is fascinated in all things plant related, James has also written three international best-selling books as well as contributing to publications such as The Guardian and The Garden. During his seminar, which is sponsored by Suttons Seeds, visitors will hear James’ unique take on the future for grow your own. He’ll offer ideas for retailers to inspire a new wave of excitement in this product area which has generated so much interest over recent years. Using his own hands-on experience in growing a wide range of unusual plants, James could have the key to tapping into the next generation of gardeners. His enthusiasm is infectious and a lively and stimulating seminar is assured. Two more plant-focused seminars will run at 3pm on


Tuesday 25 June and 10am Wednesday 26 June. Further speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.

In association with Confor and supported by the HDC and Fera, the HTA UK Plant Biosecurity Conference aims to identify an action plan for regulators and the horticulture industry to minimise the threat to the UK environment while developing a strong and thriving UK production industry.


The opening address will be


made by Defra Parliamentary Under-Secretary Lord de Mauley who will outline the Government’s view on the importance of preventing and controlling pests and diseases that could damage the UK environment. Delegates will also hear from author and acknowledged authority on the British countryside Oliver Rackham from Cambridge University. Further speakers include leading plant health officials Julie Hitchcock and Martin Ward


from Defra on the current threats facing the UK plant trade. Plus an industry panel will debate the lessons learned from the 2012 ash dieback outbreak. Breakout sessions will focus on the needs of the forestry


and amenity/retail sectors and consider the options for building resilience in the sector, replant grants, improving traceability,
