Nursery notes with John Adlam Expert advice on maintaining and presenting your plants in May

Top tips for May

l Apply anti-transpirants such as Wiltpruf S600 to prevent excessive moisture loss on newly potted outdoor crops.

l Control scale insects on Camellia, Hedera and Laurus nobilis with Chess WG (EAMU 2008-2834), Decis (non-IPM), Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona or SB Plant Invigorator.

l The cold spring weather has delayed vine weevil larvae and leatherjacket emergence so keep checking this month for grubs. Nematodes will work well on both pests or consider Intercept 70WG for non-edible crops.

l Continue downy mildew controls using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Fubol Gold WG (EAMU 2012-0217), Invader (EAMU 2012-0109), Paraat (EAMU 2011-2585), Pergado Uni (EAMU 2012-1605), Signum (EAMU 2012- 2141), Subdue or Valbon (EAMUs required).

4Aphids IPM-compatible products include Aphox, Chess WG (EAMU 2008-2834), Majestik, Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), Savona, SB Plant Invigorator. Other products include Actara (EAMU 2008-2801), Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Intercept 70WG. Delay Naturalis-L applications until temperatures reach at least 20°C. Check IRAC codes to avoid resistance.

4Beech and ornamental cherry aphid Apply Calypso (EAMU 2008-2831), Chess WG or Gazelle SG. These products will be effective even if foliage has distorted.

4Blister mites These can be present now on stems and foliage of Fraxinus, Pyrus and Sorbus. Check plants closely using a hand lens and, if seen, spray with Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Envidor (EAMU 2012-0254).

4Capsids These pests are bright green and like to feed on buds and young leaves of Caryopteris, Choisya, Dahlia, Forsythia, Hydrangea, Ribes and roses. They produce small holes which distort as foliage develops. Control feeding damage with Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Toppel 100.

4Caterpillars Pests have overwintered under glass; for small numbers, pick them off or apply Conserve, Decis (non-IPM), Dimilin Flo, Insegar WG (non-IPM), Majestik, Runner (EAMUs required), Steward (EAMU 2008-2905), Toppel 100 (non-IPM) or

4Liquid feeding Switch to high nitrogen liquid feeds on nursery stock. Choose a 2:1:1 on sprinkler systems or 2:0:1 on drip systems. Avoid applying on warm, sunny days.

4Midge Check Crataegus for gall midge activity. Eggs will start to hatch with feeding damage causing infected tips to distort into rosette-like galls. Dursban WG, Gazelle SG or Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) are effective control products.

4Powdery mildew Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), AQ10 (EAMU 2012-1324), Bumper 250EC (EAMUs required), Kindred, food- grade potassium bicarbonate, Nimrod, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Systhane 20EW are available for fungal control. Corbel, Cyflamid (EAMU 2007-0512), Stroby WG, Lyric or Folicur can be used in outdoor situations.

l Apply Cuprokylt and Serenade ASO (EAMUs required) to laurels, Magnolia, Mahonia and ornamental Prunus.

l Control shab and Botrytis on lavenders by improving air flow, especially around varieties that have tight foliage. Products available include Octave, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch.

l Change yellow and blue sticky traps regularly to ensure effective monitoring of pests.

l Notify beekeepers near your nursery if you are spraying crops in flower. l Two-spotted spider mites are now active in tunnels. Call the Nursery Stock Advice Line for an information sheet listing the approved acaricides and their effect on predators.
