KM marks 175 years


Germany’s KraussMaffei marked its 175th anniver- sary last month and intends to make the milestone a major feature of its display at the K fair. “The KraussMaffei Group with its 4,000 employees can proudly look back on the 175 years of its existence. New report identifies bioplastics land needs


European Bioplastics hopes to tackle the ‘food or feed’ argument over production of bioplastics with the publication of new research showing that current bioplastics production uses just 0.006% of the land used by global agriculture. The estimate is based on


data from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and calcula- tions by the Institute for


Bioplastics and Biocomposites as the University of Hanover in Germany. The study shows that of the


5bn hectares of land used by global agriculture, 3.5bn hectares is give to pasture and 1.4bn hectares to arable farming. Bioplastic feedstocks use 300,000 hectares of land. According to European


Bioplastics, bioplastics production capacity is set to


grow by 500% by 2016. The trade association says


that increasing the efficiency of feedstock and agricultural technology will be the key to assuring balance is maintained between land-use for bioplas- tics and land for production of food and feed. More information can be

Clariant buys Bayer’s nano-inks


Swiss chemicals group Clariant has acquired Bayer’s Bayink nano-silver ink technology, including all patents, know-how and materials. Nano-silver inks can be printed onto a


variety of substrates, including rigid and flexible plastics, to create electronic circuits. The new nano-ink products are expected to find applications in areas such as printed electronic boards, RFIDs and photovoltaics. ❙ www.clariant.com


People on the move


Frank Schuster has been promoted to the role of general sales manager at Sumitomo SHI Demag. Schuster has worked within the business for more than 12 years. In his new role he reports to Christian Renners, general manager of the sales and after sales business unit. In a separate move, the company said Sebastian Dombos becomes sales director Germany. He was previously responsible for sales in southern Germany.

Bayer has appointed Dr Markus Steilemann as head of its Polycarbonates business unit, succeeding Michael Koenig, who joined the Board of Management of Bayer AG from

the beginning of this month. Steilemann, who was previously head of industrial marketing in the Polycarbonates business, also becomes a member of the Executive Committee of Bayer MaterialScience. During his time with Bayer he has worked in Hong Kong and China as well as Germany.


RAL Colours has announced that Markus Frentrop has been appointed head of sales and marketing. Frentrop, who has a long track record in


international sales in the colour and paint industry, takes on responsibility for national and international markets at the German colour specialist.
