ABB SHOWS FAST CHARGING AT CORNISH ELECTRIC VEHICLE RALLY

A

BB demonstrated one of its Terra Smart Connect (SC) fast chargers at Truro’s first ever electric car rally on Sunday 17th March. The electric car rally, which started at Truro before following a 26 mile course to St. Austell, was held to mark the recent announcement that up to 75 percent of the cost of installing charging points for electric vehicles in both homes and public places will soon be covered

by government grants. Around 25 vehicles met in Truro for the largest ever gathering of eco-friendly cars in the county.

ABB was present at the start of the rally to show electric vehicle drivers the advantages of fast chargers. The ABB Terra SC is an effective direct current DC charging station specifically designed for convenient fast charging in commercial and office areas. It can charge an electric car from 30 percent to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes. Popular electric vehicles such as the Peugeot iON and the Nissan Leaf can all use the ABB Terra SC. The event was organised by EcoDrive, an organisation that promotes sustainable driving and Hawkins Motors, which sells several brands of electric vehicle through its dealerships in the area. Johnny Hawkins, director of Hawkins Motors, said: “Electric motoring is here and it’s here to stay, proving to customers that it’s not just about being eco-friendly, there are huge savings to be made for Cornish families.”

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people. Tel: 01925 741 111 Email: martin.hale@gb.abb.com www.abb.co.uk/evcharging

WALES LEADS THE WAY AS NEW NATURAL RESOURCES BODY BECOMES

OPERATIONAL

The environment and natural resource management can play a crucial part in tackling the economic, social and environmental challenges that face Wales. This is according to Peter Matthews, Chairman of the new organisation Natural Resources Wales, which became operational on 1 April. It is one of the first public bodies in the world that will consider social,

environmental and economic benefits in the way it manages natural resources and improves the environment. The new body’s aim is to

make sure that the natural resources of Wales are sustainably maintained, enhanced and used. In its first year it will: • protect people and their homes as far as possible from environmental incidents like flooding and pollution

• maintain and improve the quality of the environment, including the promotion of nature conservation, access and recreation

• provide opportunities for people to learn, use and benefit from Wales’ natural resources

• support Wales’ economy by using natural

resources to support jobs & enterprise

• help businesses understand and work with environmental, social and economic impacts when they bring forward proposals

environment and natural resources more resilient to climate change and other pressures. Natural Resources Wales will provide a better service for people and businesses as they will now deal with one single body rather than three. It will be the largest sponsored public body in Wales bringing together the work of the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales and Forestry Commission Wales, as well as some functions of Welsh Government.

Minister for Natural

Resources, Alun Davies said: “The natural environment is crucial to our economy here in Wales so it is vital that it is managed as effectively and efficiently as possible. “The Welsh Government has created Natural Resources Wales because we believe one

body will result in a more streamlined way of working and will ensure more effective delivery and improved value for money. “The body really does have a crucial role to play and I wish Natural Resources Wales every success in its work to deliver better outcomes for Welsh people, Welsh businesses and our unique Welsh environment.” Peter Matthews continued:

“We face many challenges – for our communities, our economy and our

environment. I believe that the natural resources we have in Wales can play their part in tackling them. “We will focus on

maintaining the important services that people and businesses rely on, like our flood warning services, maintaining timber supply and protecting valuable sites. www.naturalresourceswales .gov.uk
