WASTE/RECYCLING

Westminster City Council boost recycling with dual bins

“segregation at source” recycling in airports, shopping malls and similar environments.

Designed in a modular style to accommodating three, four or five individual waste streams, the new Constellation Envirobin has simple elegant lines combined with a huge capacity. It is constructed in powder coated mild steel or stainless steel and has individual WRAP colour compliant plastic lids with custom apertures, set into the flat top. Large, WRAP compliant labels, with self- explanatory graphics, ensure users are aware of where to deposit the recyclate or discarded items.

Each collection compartment has its own lockable access door in the front, allowing the Constellation Envirobin to be sited against a wall. Inside each compartment, waste is collected in a substantial 100 litre rotationally moulded plastic liner which has a forward facing handle making it easy to slide in and out

estminster City Council is aiming to meet recycling targets by using specially designed bins. Known as the Olympic Dual Bin,

the authority has installed them on its streets in litter hotspots as part of their ‘On the Go’ recycling initiative. The Olympic Dual Bin has a

combined waste and recycling capacity of 180 litres with stubber plates and ash collectors to help on street smokers to dispose of cigarette ends.

“Diversion from incineration of collected street litter recyclables is over 40% in most areas of the borough, but the biggest success has been the sections for stubbing and collecting the cigarette butts. The bin has brought a noticeable improvement to street cleanliness

standards in the areas where they have been installed,” comments Phil Robson, the council’s Supplier

Relationship Manager (Waste and Recycling).

Manufactured by British company Amberol at their Derbyshire factory, the bins are made from recyclable polyethylene with fire retardant inner liners and two sections: one for recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, newspapers, glass and cans and the other for items for incineration.
