VOLTAGE OPTIMISATION


Major new research project to help public sector buyers maximise energy savings from


voltage optimisation Over the last decade, Voltage Optimisation (VO) has emerged as a leading energy efficiency measure. A new research project aims to improve understanding of VO and help energy managers make better procurement decisions and maximise energy savings.


A


s an energy efficiency measure, Voltage Optimisation (VO) has come long way in a short time. It is now acknowledged as one of the simplest and most cost effective ways of reducing electricity use and carbon emissions. To help improve public understanding


of VO, Streamline Power is coordinating a programme of research that will explore in detail key aspects of this technology. The research has been designed to help buyers specify and select the most appropriate VO equipment for their facilities to help them maximise energy savings.


The project will address a number of questions, such as how low can voltage be


taken; how do different types of equipment respond at different voltages; and can voltage is buildings where VO has already been installed be reduced further? VO projects will be undertaken in two buildings, one old and one new, in a hospital on the South Coast. The research on buildings in use will be supplemented by laboratory testing on a range of electrical equipment at the Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory (University of Southampton), which will also examine the effects of stable low voltage conditions on the lifespan of electrical equipment. The research, funded by the Department of Energy and Climate


Change (DECC) and supported by the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, is one of 6 in the first wave of ‘Invest in Innovative Refurbishment’ projects. The project will also have independent oversight from BSRIA (Building Services Research and Information Association).

Following on from the success of the VPhase VX1, the new units; VX2 and VX5, are sleek in design and provide flexible installation options; whilst VPhase recommend splitting the resistive loads for optimal energy saving, there is the option to install directly into the meter tails if required. The new units will appeal to both the retrofit and new build markets, as they can be supplied with an integrated 6 way or 16 way distribution board.


VX2 is a high specification unit designed for homes and single phase installations, whilst VX5 is fitted with a high capacity transformer and is aimed at larger homes and small businesses. Once fitted, VPhase products will start saving immediately and are maintenance free with a 5 year warranty. The products have a typical pay back of 3 – 5 years depending on the overall level of electricity used in the property.
