Bringing in a substantial AUD$35 billion in 2010/11, the tourism industry is crucial to the Australian economy. Overseas arrivals reached a record number in the same period, at 5.9 million, while the number of employees in the Australian tourism sector hit 513,700. These fi gures come as no surprise, with coastal cities such as Sydney and Melbourne being popular to visitors, along with the

Australian outback and the Tasmanian wilderness. Destinations such as the Gold Coast, the Sydney Opera House, and the (largest of its kind) Great Barrier Reef are of the most iconic attractions. The reef, for one, attracts up to two million visitors per year. The country’s major events are also of interest, with the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras attracting thousands of tourists.

VISAS


Travel Visa A person wishing to travel to Australia for the purpose of sightseeing, holidaying, visiting friends and relatives, or other short-term non- working activities, must apply for a travel visa. The visa is temporary, and will allow them to stay in Australia for up to 3, 6 or 12 months.


Working Holiday Visa Those aged 18-30 can travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months with a Working Holiday Visa. The person must not be employed for more than 6 months with any one employer, and the work must be incidental to the main purpose of holidaying. They must also have a passport valid for at least 1 year, sufficient funds to support themselves when they arrive and no substantial criminal convictions or medical issues. Holders may apply for a second visa, extending their trip from 12 months


to 24, providing that they have worked as a ‘specified worker’ in regional Australia for 3 months.


Skilled Migration Visa Skilled workers who wish to migrate permanently to Australia can apply for a Skilled Migration Visa. A person must first submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and meet the requirements. A successful applicant is given a 5-year multiple entry visa.


Business Visa The Australian Business Visa Program encourages successful business owners, investors and senior executives to settle in Australia while developing new or existing opportunities in Australian business. There are two pathways for a Business Skills entry: as a Provisional Visa holder with eligibility


for permanent residence after establishing a business in Australia (Business Residence Visa), or Direct Permanent Residence for high calibre business applicants sponsored by a State/Territory government (Business Talent Visa).


Partner Visa


Individuals who wish to migrate to Australia on the basis of having an Australian partner, fiancée or spouse can apply for an Australian Partner Visa. To apply, a person’s sponsor must provide a written statement pledging to support them for their first 2 years in Australia, and their relationship with the partner will be assessed. Those applying on the basis of a fiancée


will receive a ‘Prospective Marriage Visa’, which is valid for 9 months – they must enter Australia as a fiancée and marry their sponsor within the period the visa is valid.
