The relatively young country of Australia is a fi rm favourite with students and ex-pats looking for an affl uent lifestyle and a good dose of sunshine. temperate. Australia’s size means it has a wide variety of landscapes, with subtropical rain forests in the north- east, mountain ranges in the south- east, south-west and east, and dry desert in the centre. A highly-developed and wealthy
country, Australia has the world’s twelfth largest economy, with the fi fth highest per capita income and a low poverty rate. It ranked third in the
Index of Economic Freedom in 2010, second in the Human Development Index of 2011, and fi rst in Legatum’s 2008 Prosperity Index. Many of its major cities ranked high in The Economist’s 2011 and 2012 world’s most livable cities lists: Melbourne was placed fi rst, while Sydney, Perth and Adelaide were given sixth, eighth and ninth place respectively. The currency is the Australian dollar (AUD).
The country’s political system is liberal democratic, which functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. It is a member of: G20, OECD, WTO, APEC, UN, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS and the Pacifi c Islands Forum. It has an estimated population of 22,923,106, with Sydney as the largest populated area at 4,605,992.
