What better time to be aware of “Earth Music” than in April! With the rebirth of nature all around us, the “biophony” (the fi rst music ever heard!) is still with us—if we take time to listen. (See p.34.) Take a walk and focus on


what you hear—with no phone or headset! Can you tell the


distinctive call of the cardinal? Or the cheery voice of a wren? If it’s night, the lonely, many-syllable hoot of the owl echoes through the trees…. Daytime “peeps” from Spring nests mean that newly-hatched birds are calling for food. If you’re as lucky as we are, you can peek in a nest (on our window sill) and see multiple tiny beaks open and waiting. No wonder mother wren is making so many trips with delectable bug morsels! On your walk, or sitting on your porch or patio, is there anything more soothing than a gentle breeze tossing tree branches?....Or if you’re near Florida water, does the sound and sight of the ocean calm your spirit? The sounds of nature can be so restorative! Don’t let electronics prevent your daily pleasure in the “symphony” all around us.
