Are Your Genetics Blocking Your Ability to Detox?
by Michael Kehoe, PA-C, PhD T
he question is not whether you are toxic or not. The better question is “How toxic are we and what can we do about it?” The fact is we live in toxic environments
and everything we eat, drink or breathe has the potential to add to our level of toxicity. It is probably obvious to

many that we can control some of these factors through the choices we make in our lives. Many people choose to eat organic fruits and vegetables, avoid meats from animals given antibiotics and growth hormones, remove and replace dental amalgams with mercury or give up—or never start smoking in the fi rst place. All of these decisions are made in attempts to remove potential toxic exposures. However, despite our best efforts, the fact remains our bodies must be able to cope with the levels of toxic compounds they are exposed to— or the potential for health complications exists. One detoxifi cation pathway that involves genetic predispositions for a person’s ability to detoxify is beginning to gain greater awareness in medical circles. This pathway involves the potential for a genetic mutation called methylenetetrahydrofolate reducatse, or MTHFR, and each person has the potential for a genetic mutation from both mother and father that impact their ability to effectively methylate. Methylation is a chemical process that usually occurs in the liver (our body’s primary detoxifying organ). It involves the ability to convert hormones, medications and other compounds from a fat-soluble nature to a water-soluble nature so that they can be eliminated effectively and safely through our stool, bile and urine. Unfortunately, when a person has one or more of these genetic variants, their ability to detoxify via these methylation pathways can be partially, or perhaps signifi cantly, compromised. An individual can inherit either no gene mutations from either parent or a single copy of two potential gene variants (the A1298c or the C677T) from each parent. Although single copies of a gene mutation have not been shown to
