Res 1963 STUDEBAKER AVANTI

1963 STUDEBAKER AVANTI 289-CID, 240-HP V-8, 4-SPEED MANUAL

SOLD AT $23,650 | APRIL 4, 2012 BARRETT-JACKSON, WEST PALM BEACH, FL | LOT 43.2

This R-1 model, which used the non- supercharged 289, had good Avanti Red paint, sharp brightwork and a decent interior. There were several small issues with originality, and one huge one: By serial number, this was a “round headlight” example; instead it carried the post-1964 square head- light bezels and trim. It would be a stretch to think that someone wanted to update his ’63 to a ’64 look, so per- haps this happened after a front end crunch. Best to find out.

SOLD AT $2,310 | AUGUST 31, 2012 AUCTIONS AMERICA, AUBURN, IN | LOT 3020

This silver and blue barn find was claimed to be a 19,216-original-mile car, backed up with a signed odometer statement from its previous owner. It featured power steering, brakes and windows, plus an AM/FM radio. The body showed plenty of surface rust, with more than a bit of body rust as well. All the chrome was there, but much of the trim was weak. This will be a challenging project car to bring back to life, but with plenty of determination (and even more money), it can be done.

1963 STUDEBAKER AVANTI

1963 STUDEBAKER AVANTI 289-CID, 240-HP V-8, 3-SPEED AUTO

SOLD AT $9,750 | MARCH 29, 2012 MECUM, KANSAS CITY, MO | LOT F96

This Avanti Red example sported a claret interior. After long-term shed storage, it looked the part, with faded paint and likely a few hidden surprises in this claimed-22,000-mile example. All of the chrome appeared intact, as did most of the small trim pieces. As a do-it-yourself Studebaker, you could take this one as far as your checkbook allowed. Fiberglass or not, Avantis with rusty frames and sub-floor boxes are easy to find. But little to no rust turned up in this one, so it was a good buy.

Described as an early-build example with the Nailhead V-8, this Riv had air conditioning, power seats and power windows. The Arctic White paint looked good and the blue leather interior was original but for the recovered front seats. Underhood was clean, and the seller noted much recent mechanical work. Very attractively priced, this car should have brought at least a few thou- sand more.
