YOUR TURN BEFORE & AFTER 1971 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO
PRICE RANGE: $7,900–$17,550
Stephen Diriwachter and his girlfriend Lori Zerilli found their 1971 Chev- rolet Monte Carlo in fall 2011 and spent the winter bringing it back to life. It was Lori’s idea, and though she had never restored a car, she dove right in to every aspect of the project. “She broke a few of her fingernails, spent cold days in the garage, helped to find parts and was hands-on with every part of the tear-down and reassembly,” Stephen says. Now resplendent with new paint and fitted with a new interior and a fresh 350-cid crate engine and TH350 transmission, Stephen and Lori’s Monte is perfect for cruising the Jersey Shore and hitting shows. The couple loved the experience so much, they just bought another ’71 and plan to show them side by side this summer.
1970 FORD MAVERICK GRABBER
PRICE RANGE: $6,000–$16,500
Eric Johnson found his 1970 Ford Maverick Grabber when a new member on the forum
maverick.to asked if anyone was interested in buying a family friend’s old car. Johnson drove from his home in Wisconsin to Chicago to check it out, and what he found was a no-frills Maverick with the 200-cid straight-six and three-on-the-tree. The car had been sitting since 1985, when the original owner passed away. “The real attraction,” Eric says, “was the optional Grabber appearance package and very low miles.” Just 12,600, to be exact. But with years of Chicago winter driving, the whole car was a mess of surface rust and small dings, so Eric spent the next two years bring- ing it back to show- room condition, using NOS parts. His Maver- ick has since won two best of show awards, “against all those nice Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs — truly something to ponder.”
1974 BMW 2002 ORIGINAL
PRICE RANGE: $6,500–$29,000
Tom Speeches has always loved his 1974 BMW 2002, even when it be- longed to his best friend’s dad, the original owner, who bought it new for $7,250 from Jari Motors in Vestal, New York. Tom says the man took meticu- lous care of his Jade Green 2002 and even allowed Tom to drive it a few times — with him riding shotgun, of course. The man’s children had no interest in the car, and when he passed he left the BMW to Tom, “with the un- derstanding that I would cherish it as he did, maintain it as he did and really enjoy it as he did… Yes, yes and yes again.” With just 47,000 miles on the clock, the BMW is still in remarkable original shape, and most people who encounter it have never seen one in this condition. The next time you’re on Long Island on a sunny day, look for Tom in his pristine classic.
