SHORT SHIFTS
ARIZONA AUCTION RECAP
Stefan Lombard
This year began much the way 2012 ended — riding from strength to strength in the classic car market. Following record results in Monterey, Arizona’s January sales offered nearly 2,700 cars across six auctions, and buyers responded, with sales up by $40 million over last year.
Barrett-Jackson kicked off a week of sunshine and 72-degree days on Tuesday the 14th, and by Sunday night the hometown team had posted a $102.5 million result, its highest total since the peak of the market in 2007. Muscle and customs led the way, with the George Barris- owned, Lincoln Futura-based 1966 Batmobile topping all B-J sales at $4.62 million following an electric atmosphere in the auction tent.
High sale honors for the week, how- ever, fell to Gooding & Company,

which sold a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider for $8.25 mil- lion. The result is an auction record for long-wheelbase models and is further proof that Cal Spiders both long and short remain hot commod- ities inside and outside the auction tent. Gooding posted a $52.6 mil- lion final tally from its two-day sale, up $12.8 million over 2012.
RM Auctions also scored big with a red car from Italy, this one an $8.14 million 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione Berlinetta. RM aban- doned its two-day format of the last few years for a single-day auction, yet still bested last year’s result by an impressive $10.7 million.
Perhaps the biggest gainer of the week was Bonhams. In its second Scottsdale auction, the firm more than doubled its 2012 total, from $6.0 million to $13.4 million. A 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A was the high sale at $1,312,500.
