Kwan ties the knot Michelle Kwan, a fi ve-time World champion and nine-time U.S. titlist, married Clay

Pell, the grandson of the late U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.), Jan. 19 in Providence, R.I. Kwan, who burst onto the skating scene at the U.S. Olympic Festival when she was 13 back in 1993, is now 32 and works at the State Department as a senior adviser for public diplomacy and public aff airs. Pell, 31, is a Coast Guard lieutenant and serves as the director for strategic planning on the National Security Staff at the White House. “It was a beautifully done wedding and Michelle was elegant beyond belief,” Dick

Button said of Kwan, who wore two dresses designed by Vera Wang. “It was a great honor for me to be there and a great pleasure to attend.” Button was among a handful of skating guests who were invited to the wedding. Olympic champions Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill were also in Providence to cel- ebrate Kwan’s big day, as were Champions on Ice tour founder Tom Collins and Evelyn Kramer, a coach who has known Kwan since she began training in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., as a youngster. “I was with her at her fi rst competition and had to tell her to put on lipstick,” Kramer

said. “Now she is married!” Kwan’s wedding day marked yet another milestone recorded in the public eye. Al- though her husband comes from a prominent political fam- ily — even he realizes his fame pales next to that of his new bride — the man who is now Michelle Kwan’s husband re- ceived high marks from those in the skating crowd. “I met him when Michelle

was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year in San Jose,” Col- lins said. “I liked him right away and I said, ‘Michelle, this is the guy for you.’”
