JUVENILE

got really excited after our twizzles, because we were pretty much done with the program and we had done everything well.” Following pattern dance per- formances of the Foxtrot and Wil- low Waltz that displayed a level of closeness and speed rarely achieved at such a young age, the Greens en- tered the final segment of the event with a four-point lead. Already three years into their partnership, the 9- and 11-year-old siblings con- sider their impressive scores a step- ping-stone toward their ultimate goal.

“We want to go to the Olym-

pics together,” Gordon said. “We don’t want to break up; we want to be together a long time like Meryl and Charlie.” Caroline and Gordon earned 46.60 points for their pirate-themed free dance, which received Level 4s on three of five elements, en route to 85.83 points for the week. Jumping from a fourth-place finish in the pattern dance segment, Alina Efimova and Kevin Kwong placed second in the event with 78.68 points.

“At first it was a little scary

out there, but after our footwork I relaxed and just had fun,” Efimova said.

In their second year under the tutelage of coach Nathan Truesdell, a former pupil of renowned ice dancing coach Igor Shpilband, Efi- mova and Kwong propelled them- selves from a 10th-place finish at last year’s championships all the way to the silver medal. “Te first year they were just

learning the ropes and I just want- ed them to get comfortable skating together,” Truesdell said. “Tis year we focused a lot more on technique, edges, getting the levels, things like that. It’s incredible, but it’s a little nerve-racking, the whole coach- ing thing. At the end of the day, nothing is in your hands; it’s all up to them. All you can do is sit and watch.”

Completing the podium were

Elizabeth Addas and Jonathan Schultz with 77.68 points, and Katherine Grosul and Cameron Colucci, who finished fourth with 76.07 points.
