FRENCH Janet Rice French, 97, passed away on


Jan. 9, 2013, at her home in the Washington, D.C., area. Janet devoted most of her life to figure skating. As a young woman, she com- peted at the U.S. Championships. She be- came a respected judge and was honored by U.S. Figure Skating in 1991 for more than 50 years of volunteer judging. She served sever- al terms on the board of directors of the Buf- falo Figure Skating Club. International travels in her later years often related to her lifelong interest in skating events. Born Janet Cordes Rice on Oct. 22, 1915,


Janet and her family were longtime residents of Buffalo, N.Y. She attended the Franklin School and Buffalo Seminary. After graduat-


ing from the University of Buffalo in 1938, she worked in pathology at Buffalo General Hos- pital. On the eve of World War II, she married Buffalo lawyer Joseph W. French. Janet lived in the Buffalo area for most of their 54 years of marriage, with a four-year interlude in Hawaii where her husband was attorney for Dole Pineapple Company. They returned to Buffa- lo in 1951 when he became general manager of the Peace Bridge. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia


Staniland French (a World-level figure skating judge) and Barbara French Pace; two grand- children, Catherine Williamson and James Cameron; and four great-grandchildren, all residing in the Washington, D.C., area. Contributions in Janet’s memory may

CUNNINGHAM James A. Cunningham, who volunteered


as a music coordinator for many U.S. Figure Skating events, passed away on Dec. 29, 2012. He was 86. James is survived by his wife Joy L. Cun- ningham, daughter Denise Joy Cunningham Nolso, MD (Janus) of Faroe Islands; son James B. Cunningham of Delaware, Ohio; and grand children Irene and Astrid Andersson.
