Ice dancers Alexandra Aldridge and Dan- iel Eaton received the 2013 Ron and Gayle Hershberger Fund Award in Omaha. The two- time U.S. junior champions won the grants for having the highest short dance and free dance component marks at the U.S. Cham- pionships in Omaha. The award, now in its third year, rotates among the four disciplines. Ron Hershberger served as U.S. Figure Skat- ing president from 2005 to 2009. Also, Tyler Pierce and Oleksiy Melnyk received the Cecilia Colledge Memorial Fund Award, which is pre- sented annually to the novice lady and man who achieve the highest combined program components score of the U.S. Champion- ships. Colledge won the silver medal at the 1936 Olympics and the 1937 World title while representing Great Britain. She joined the coaching staff at The Skating Club of Boston, where she taught until 1977.


Members of the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team are honored during an on-ice ceremony in Omaha. The 10 outstanding student-athletes were recognized for their efforts in the classroom, in their communities and as competitive skaters. Honorees receive scholarships and team jackets, and a donation is made in each member’s honor to the char- ity of their choice. The Scholastic Honors Team is funded through the generosity of the Pio- neer Fund, the legacy of the late Helen McLoraine. Junior ice dancers Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker visit with Friends of Fig- ure Skating members Shirley and David Lewis at the FOFS breakfast in Omaha. More than 150 FOFS members attended the annual FOFS breakfast. While din- ing on eggs and breakfast sausage, attendees were treated to a keynote speech from senior pairs competitor Mark Ladwig. In all, 57 athletes, ranging in level from juvenile to senior, attended the breakfast to meet and mingle with FOFS members. The 2013–14 Friends of Figure Skating season begins Oct. 1, 2013. Two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner received the Michelle Kwan Trophy as SKATING magazine’s win- ner of the 2012 Readers’ Choice Award. Wagner enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2011–12, capped off by winning her first U.S. title and less than two weeks later capturing the 2012 Four Continents Champion- ships. She went on to finish fourth at the 2012 World Championships. SKATING magazine editor Troy Schwindt presented Wagner the award during the Smucker’s Skating Spectacular.
