More waterparks on the way!
In designing the park, Mahony and his team started with the wave pool and lazy river – the keystones of any well-designed waterpark thanks to their ability to “eat” a large number of guests and ease capacity on the more fast-paced slides and attractions. Ramayana Water Park will in fact have two wave pools side by side, as well as a Flow River (action river). Directly in front of the larger pool will be a large seating area, stage, food, beverage and retail options. Whilst dining in a beach-style restaurant, offering local and western cuisine, guests will be able to watch the more adventurous waterpark patrons show off their skills on the FlowRider surf simulator. Or they can kick back in the leisure pool with its swim-up bar. This area will really come alive during special night openings, when live entertainment will be provided.
Slides and Attractions The bulk of the park’s slides and attractions will be connected to two towers to the rear of the wave pool area. Promised are Asia’s first ever WhiteWater Vortex, a Boomerango, MegaTube raft ride, family raft ride, duelling MasterBlaster water coasters, an AquaLoop looping waterslide, 4-lane Whizzard mat racer, freefall side, plus various tube slides. Kids stepping into the “monkey forest” will find a
giant custom-themed AquaPlay Rainfortress with multiple interactive water features. Elsewhere there will be a large kids’ pool with its own selection of mini tube and body slides, plus a mini Python and a 100mm-shallow water area with various water toys and spray features.
Around 25% of the site will be left free for future expansion. Surprisingly, perhaps, there are no immediate plans for a hotel. “We could go down that avenue in future, but I believe for a lot of people we are going to be a day trip,” says Mahony. “People will come here from Bangkok, but then they are going to want to go and have seafood down by the beach for dinner.”
After working with Saatchi & Saatchi Thailand to develop the Ramayana Water Park branding (its fresh- looking logo is splattered across the office building on the main road from Pattaya to Jomtien), there is mounting anticipation locally. Construction is now well underway and at the time of writing, the park’s predicted opening will be in mid to late 2013. If it’s a hit, Badekha hopes to build more facilities along similar lines. Located near Jomtien, the established Pattaya Park (
pattayapark.com) features a mix of waterpark, amusement park, mid-range hotel rooms and a revolving restaurant at the top of an observation tower. Many of its attractions, including the pool and waterslides, are showing their age, but it has its share of loyal guests. What the arrival of Ramayana Water Park and
Cartoon Network Amazone (
cartoonnetworkamazone.com) will do is bring a new level of world-class facilities to the area. The latter, the world’s first Cartoon Network waterpark, will be located at Bang Saray, close to Pattaya, and feature a rainforest theme integrating the licensed properties Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo and The Amazing World of Gumball. Kitted out by Polin Waterparks & Pool Systems, it will feature a number of signature attractions in addition to a large family wave pool, adventure river, speed slides, raft rides and one of the world’s largest interactive playgrounds. Launching late 2013, the park will open year round. A third new waterpark has also been mooted for the area, although details remain sketchy.
