CONSTRUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
He added: “Having looked at integration and interface issues, they do believe that a portal in the Wimbledon area is feasible and that the interface issues are manageable.”
He had particular praise for Chris Rowley of Network Rail and Michele Dix of TfL who provided expert guidance and advice.
He said: “A key issue for the LU people in particular is the need for absolute confi dence that you’ve got that very high frequency service through the central core: that you can run that well and that it’s not going to get messed up by confl ict on either end. But actually everyone seems to have been reassured on that ground.”
Fair share
Despite HS2, the Northern Hub and other investment around the country, some cities and regions may be forgiven for thinking that London and the south east has already sucked up a huge amount of transport funding – is it fair for it to be gifted another £12bn for Crossrail 2?
Leam acknowledged it would be a “concern” for other parts of the UK, but told us: “We’re not saying in this report that this is the only thing we should be doing or indeed that this should be at the expense of anywhere else. In everything that Andrew [Adonis] was saying, he was keen to stress that the major national transport infrastructure project is HS2 – to improve connections between our cities. That’s an absolute national priority.
“This is a priority for London and the south east to help manage growth. It’s partly the sheer volumes. When you look at the population fi gures, the journey fi gures, the congestion fi gures, general ridership – the numbers that we’re talking about here in London and the south east are on a whole different scale than anywhere else.
“It will be expensive, it will be challenging but the lesson that we take from Crossrail is that we would be in a lot better place now if we’d managed to be ten years further on with that scheme.”
TfL is due to consult on Crossrail 2 and the route options the spring.
