THE “EASTERN”
SOME PHOTO CHARTERS try to recreate the past as closely as possible, with paint schemes and props to match a by- gone era. Other charters, by design or necessity, portray a “what if” scenario. Both design and necessity came into play for a charter on the Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania put together by Lerro Productions on February 19, 2013. The “what if” piece answered the question “What would Great Western 2-10-0 No. 90 look like if it had the clas- sic diamond scheme applied to it before the smokebox was extended?” (See page 12 for more on No. 90’s history and the changes applied for the char- ter). And, by necessity, a mixed freight train consist was used for the charter, as the sugar beet cars that No. 90 hauled during its working days in Col- orado are not available. Purists might cringe, but nonetheless the train looked good and the photographers in atten- dance had a great time. And when you come right down to it, having a great time is the ultimate goal of a charter.

While not quite a high plains drifter in Colorado, a cowboy and his horse wait as Great Western No. 90 rolls along with mixed freight through the Amish countryside of Lancaster County, Penn., just east of Strasburg.
