VISAS
For nationals of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Lichtenstein, visas are not required regardless of purpose and/or length of stay in Spain. However, for other citizens, there are a number of different types of visas one can apply for:
Work Visa If one wishes to work in Spain, they must obtain both a work permit and residence visa before moving to Spain. They cannot obtain a residence visa while
already in Spain. Once a work permit has been obtained, they will receive a “resolución” from the Spanish Ministry of Labour, and must apply for the visa within a month of receiving this. The residence visa is valid for 90 days upon entry to the country, and only permits one period of entry. High unemployment rates in the country mean that the visa can be diffi cult to obtain.
Student Visa In order to study or research in Spain, one must obtain a student visa. These can be either for short-term courses (less than 90 days) or long-term courses (more than 90 days), which usually entails study at a primary or secondary school or university.
The study visa can only be obtained once
a person has been accepted onto the course and paid any fees required by the institution. A residence permit will also be valid for three months after the course completion.
Family dependency Visas One can apply for a dependency visa into Spain if they are the spouse, children or parents of a European national.
The EU member must be employed or self-
employed in the territory of an EU member state. Dependents of EU nationals already living in Spain, or those wishing to move to the
country with their EU spouses can now apply for a residence permit in Spain without having to apply for a visa prior to departure. For those who require an entry visa to enter Spain, they should apply for a visa to allow them to join their EU spouse.
Schengen Visa A Schengen visa allows a person to travel to/ through several European countries, and move freely between them for the validity of the visa. If a person wishes to visit only one of the Schengen countries, they must apply for the visa at the Embassy or Consulate of that country. If they wish to visit several, they must apply
for the visa at the Embassy or Consulate of their main destination. To obtain a Schengen visa, the person must hold a passport that is recognised by all of the Schengen member states.
