Toronto sticks with plastic carrier bags
Toronto City Council in Canada has voted to reverse a proposed ban on single-use plastic bags, that had been scheduled to come into effect on 1 January 2013. The Canada Plastic Bag Association had earlier begun legal action in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. “As Toronto City Council gave no
notice, undertook no public consultation, carried out no due diligence, and received no advice prior to adopting the plastic bag ban, the resolution ought to be quashed for having been passed in bad faith,” said CPBA spokesman Joe Hruska. The Ontario Convenience Stores
Association also launched a legal challenge to the ban, arguing that the law was outside the city’s jurisdiction and was rushed through without consultation. “The by-law selectively exempts dozens of plastic bags, but targets a single type – one that many retailers rely upon and that research shows consum- ers frequently re-use after they carry home their purchases,” said Dave Bryans, CEO of OCSA. City councillors took legal advice,
before voting 38 to 7 to reverse the ban. According to local news outlet CBC
News, the council is due to “revisit the issue in June”.
Succinic acid plant starts up
Reverdia’s Biosuccinium plant has an annual capacity of around 10,000 tonnes
Reverdia, the joint venture between DSM and Roquette Frères, has begun operat- ing a commercial-scale plant producing Biosuccinium-branded succinic acid. The plant, in Cassano Spinola, Italy,
has a capacity of about 10,000 tonnes/ year, and claims to be the world’s fi rst dedicated large-scale plant for making succinic acid from renewable resources. It is also the only commercial facility to benefi t from experience gained using low-pH yeast technology on a demonstra- tion plant scale. The main applications of the material

include polybutylene succinate (PBS), polyester polyols for polyurethanes, coating and composite resins, plus phthalate-free plasticisers. “This will enable direct and indirect
customers to start production of com- mercial scale volumes of materials and end products based on bio-based succinic acid,” said Will van den Tweel, Reverdia’s general manager. “These will be the fi rst Biosuccinium-based products to fi nd operational use in industry and to show up on retail shelves.”
