books Asian business

Andritz Biax has recently supplied biaxial film technology to three separate customers in Asia. Most recently, it upgraded a BOPP film line at Sam Young Chemical, in South Korea, by supplying a Transverse Direction Orienter (TDO), a pull roll stand with direct drives, and a winder with control system. Sam Young is a leading

producer of capacitor film, and films for packaging applications. Start-up of the line is due in early 2014. Andritz has also received

an order from Zhejiang Yunsu Film Industrial in China for a BOPP film production line. Yunsu Film is a subsidiary of TANF Tape, a leading producer of plastic tapes such as standard adhesive tape. The line is scheduled to begin production in 2013. Annual production capacity

of the three-layer, 8.2m wide is around 35,000 tonnes. At the same time, it will

supply a Mesim stretching line to Chinese film manufacturer Zhejiang Nanyang Technology. The 5.1m wide line, to make various PET films of 2-75 microns, is due to start production in early 2014. Mesim is a process that

stretches film in both directions simultaneously. It suits all kinds of polymers, and makes products with high optical and physical properties. ❙ www.andritz.com

46 FILM & SHEET EXTRUSION | December 2012/January 2013 Counter-rotation boosts output

Northern Ireland-based Brett Martin is using a high- throughput counter-rotating extruder from Austria’s Battenfeld-Cincinnati to boost production of PVC sheet. “We were impressed by

the flexibility of this extruder, which enables us to produce PVC sheet with thicknesses from 3.0 to 25 mm,” said David Robinson, technical director at Brett Martin.

FILM EXTRUSION New technologies unveiled by SML

SML of Austria presented three extrusion technologies at a recent open house event. It unveiled its Topsheet line, which makes vacuum-perfo- rated aperture film that is used as the skin-touching inside layer in adult diapers and feminine care products. Because it can produce

vacuum-perforated films more efficiently, applications outside the hygiene film market are developing, says SML. The company also show-

cased a multifunctional cast film line with integrated MDO unit for a range of different film products such as polyole- fin and polyester films (with or

without barrier layers), either non-oriented or mono-ori- ented. The line was running a 20

micron MOPET film. It incorporated a new genera- tion of extruders for thermo- sensitive polymers (such as EVOH and resins for tie, peel and seal layers) and a new cast film winder with inline slitting capabilities.

At the same time, its rPET sheet line uses a conical twin screw extruder to produce thermoformable sheet. A new drying and flake treatment system, which uses infrared radiation inside a vacuum vessel, quickly increases the intrinsic viscosity of low-quality post consumer PET bottle flakes. ❙ www.sml.at

www.filmandsheet.com As well as a wide process-

ing window, the counter-rotat- ing extruder – the largest in

Battenfeld-Cincinnati’s portfolio, with an ouput up to 2,000kg/hr – offers high output, robust design and easy operation. A closed- loop, self-regulating Intracool screw tempering system and APC (air power cooling) barrel cooling system, it ensures constant melt temperatures and high product quality. ❙ www.battenfeld-cincinnati.com
