Lucky Cat on the move: Scrub, a division of HHB Communications, worked with Lucky Cat Post Production to provide sales and technical support for the firm’s new Pro Tools-based audio department. Originally located on Margaret Street in Soho, Lucky Cat Owner Jonathan Myers moved the business to larger premises on Poland Street to make space for audio post production suites that complement its existing video department. Sales and technical staff at Scrub and HHB worked alongside the company to provide and install an Avid D-Command console, Pro Tools HDX and v10 software, a Genelec DSP monitoring system and a host of other equipment from Neumann, Blackmagic and Focusrite. www.hhb.co.uk

Mealtime for Splice Post production house Splice has started using a newly constructed floor in its facility housing nine Avid Media Composer suites equipped with AJA Kona 3G capture cards for the post workflow of TV show Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals. Splice Managing Director and Co-Founder Damian Dolniak said, “The series is fairly heavy in terms of effects and complex sequences, and involves a lot of cross-cutting. Our new Kona 3Gs tied in nicely with the new Avid suites and worked so well — especially with the AJA Kona cards and Media Composer 6.5 ability for audio punch in and up/down/cross-conversion capabilities. They give us the ability to tackle those challenging sequences in realtime without hindering our work. The cards have also been extremely consistent in terms of output levels.” www.aja.com

convention in Vegas in April, has continued to build throughout the community of creative professionals. As a leader in high-end effects and 3D, Autodesk is committed to making that technology increasingly available to a new generation, and the new Smoke is case in point,” said Mark Strassman, Autodesk Media & Entertainment vice president strategy and marketing. The new Smoke offers editing and effects within a single timeline-based workflow and runs on a wide variety of Apple MacBook Pro and Apple iMac computers. New features which grew directly out of user recommendations include: ability to drag and drop a clip from the source player into the timeline; ability to expand/collapse the timeline FX pipeline area; and redesign and streamlining of the UI and interface elements to speed up workflows. www.autodesk.com

Blackmagic provides Elementary correction Los Angeles-based post production company Encore has used Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve for colour grading on CBS’ television show Elementary.

“The ability to work from either colour corrected dailies or camera original LOG material at the click of a node gives me extreme versatility and saves time and effort,” said Tony D’Amore, senior colourist at Encore, who is responsible for colour grading the entire show. “In the past, I would have to drag in an offline cassette and queue up and switch the tape, having to look at it before cutting back. With Resolve, in one click I can mute the node and see it without the dailies’ CDL if need be.” Using Resolve’s node based processing, D’Amore takes advantage of unlimited Power Windows with circle, linear, polygon and PowerCurve shapes, which he uses to address any issues. www.blackmagicdesign.com

Polecam rig to Fiennes A Polecam rig was delivered to Sir Ranulph Fiennes and his expedition members on board the research ship SA Agulhas at its River Thames mooring in London recently before it left on the first leg of its journey to Antarctica. The Polecam will be a great addition to the other cameras on board the boat. Not only will it give increased production value to what they already have, but it will be able to provide some unique perspectives of interviews and training on board, the loading and unloading of all the equipment, and the documentation of the expedition’s progress. The Polecam, fitted with the new Polecam Long Head, will be mounted with a Panasonic HPX250 P2HD camcorder. The six month expedition is being called ‘The Coldest Journey’, and will see the team of six crossing around 2,000 miles, mostly in complete darkness and in temperatures as low as -90˚C. www.polecam.com

Input Media selects Snell European sports production company Input Media is using a Snell Kahuna 360 multi-format production switcher and Sirius 830 router with AHP (advanced hybrid processing) to deliver live production of sports programming across multiple studio galleries. The Snell systems, supplied and integrated by Gearhouse Broadcast, give Input Media the flexibility to run a greater number of productions within the company’s London Production Centre. With built-in support for 1080p supplied as standard, Kahuna 360 and Sirius 830 also expand Input Media’s current and future HD capabilities. Multiple galleries or studios run from a single Kahuna 360 mainframe, and the system allows Input Media to take on a variety of job types with differing resource requirements. The 15-RU Sirius 830 multi- format hybrid router features modules for routing of SD, HD, ASI, and 3Gbps signals. The Snell equipment was taken live earlier this month for production of the FA Cup. www.snellgroup.com

the Deca Lightweight Audio Bag because it keeps my recorder and wires tight to my body, which lessens the effects of weight and keeps my footprint as small as possible. My Lectrosonics 411s and SRs fit snugly in the elastic tie downs and there’s a synch-down strap that makes the wireless solid and small. I can then quickly lose what I’m not using, which keeps my bag light so I’m not slowed down. Even with several wires in play, I can manage to make the rig compact enough to allow booming to be a viable option. I used to try to do this via Velcro, but had to fight constant snags and the hassle of disassembling a block of velcroed receivers. This
