environment, but will it meet all the requirements of the broadcaster in the future? Is it supported by a vendor who understands the problems that can occur downstream for subtitling provision? Fortunately a Polistream system can be integrated with many CiaB solutions, providing the CiaB product has an API that allows access to the programme schedule and the timecode for the current playing item (for subtitle synchronisation). A single centrally managed Polistream system can provide subtitles for multiple channels, so a sophisticated subtitling option is available when needed for broadcasters using Channel in a Box systems.
In closing, it might seem that this is dismissive of the CiaB concept, but in fact, it’s far from it. CiaB systems have considerable merit for the cost effective origination of certain types of programming. It is merely our position that some specialisms remain that: the province of specialists.
Thinking outside the box
For quite some time, the buzz in our industry has been about compact, self-contained systems — the much-ballyhooed Channel in a Box. But for those watching the trends, it’s clear that the whole Channel in a Box paradigm is already passé. By Gilbert Leb, VP Sales and Marketing, ToolsOnAir
IN REALITY, today’s forward-thinking broadcasters have moved outside the box, implementing sophisticated, professional grade channels without the need for a proprietary black box system. ToolsOnAir has led the charge, first with our ‘TV Station in a Mac,’ and last year with the introduction of our ‘TV Station in a Mac Mini.’ Using Apple’s new generation Mac Mini with a Thunderbolt- based multi-I/O interface, an entire professional playout system can now fit into a single rack space, consuming only 85 Watts of power and requiring minimal space and cooling.
