The international operation of Rail Training International (RTI), a leading UK railway training provider, is poised to expand further in an exciting partnership with their local Saudi Arabian based partner SACOR (Saudi Company for Railway Services), which is a subsidiary of the Saudi construction giant Al-Mobty. This collaboration combines two key players in the industry, with RTI as one of the fastest growing rail industry training providers in the UK, returning a 60% increase in sales in the past twelve months (Source: Plimsoll Analysis) and holding a number of long-term contracts, both in the UK and internationally, including countries as diverse as France, Ireland, Romania, Turkey and Vietnam. On the other hand, Al-Mobty Group is one of the top 100 growing firms worldwide, and it possesses the largest railway fleet in KSA after the two major government-owned operators SRO and SAR.
The economic development being experienced by Saudi in general, and the local railway boom specifically, has seen the Saudi government place great significance on the development of local skills and, in particular, development of young Saudis into industries such as rail. In response, the training arm of SACOR is building a new railway training academy to meet the needs for a growing workforce and to contribute to Saudi Government policy.
RTI have been supporting SACOR in developing a range of railway engineering (Signals, Track, Traction & Rolling Stock) apprenticeship programmes that have been approved by the Saudi Government’s Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC). Currently these are the only railway education programmes approved by TVTC. RTI have also supported the specification for the new build “state-of-the-art”
railway training centre, the first of its type in Saudi Arabia. RTI will co-manage the training facility with SACOR and will provide the training design and delivery expertise across the full range of rail disciplines, as well as management development, computer application and English language training courses.
The design of the railway training academy uses eco- friendly, green energy efficient materials and provides fourteen classrooms, train driver simulation, a range of workshops for hands-on practical training, internal garden (unusual for Riyadh!), cafeteria, library and learner break-out zones. The training academy will have a direct rail link to the main national rail network.
The Academy complex is entirely self-sufficient in terms of equipment and infrastructure, providing the training capacity to meet the needs of large railway operators, railway construction companies, government agencies and the general public.
Training courses will take account of local needs and culture, with an equal emphasis on the personal development and growth of the individual coupled with the competence requirements to operate safely on the railway.
RTI’s Managing Director, Dr Andy Russell said: “our successful development into the Saudi market is a measure of the excellent international reputation that RTI has built in recent years, and the quality of training resource that we bring to the table.”
