Surface Design Show

Award Announcements

We’ve done our research on what to expect from this year’s exciting new Surface Design Awards 2013.

Ten years is a long time to maintain a relevant presence as a trade exhibition, and the Surface Design Show is understandably keen to celebrate their decade of success. As such, organisers have decided to mark the 10th anniversary of the show by introducing the Surface Design Awards 2013. These new awards are set to recognise

creative, progressive surface design, as well as innovative use of surfaces in projects from the UK and internationally. Organisers have been delighted with the variety of entries they’ve received, with large and small companies getting involved, including architects, contractors and interior designers all keen to promote their private and public sector projects. “In addition to entries from all four UK

countries, we have also received entries from Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland and Italy, making the first Surface Design Awards truly international,” explains Christopher Newton, Director of the show. The event will feature ten awards in total, spanning six categories. Two awards are focused specifically on the retail category, with Retail Interior surface and Retail Exterior Surface both up for grabs. Schemes in all areas of retail from shopping centres to instore features will be considered for the award, so the search for a winner should offer an exploration of the very best in the use of surfaces in the retail sector.

“We wanted to celebrate the 10th

anniversary of the show by giving something back to the industry,” states Newton. “These new awards will be given to the architects, designers contractors and clients who have created something special". A celebration of innovative materials

wouldn’t be the same without an incredible Award design. The task has fallen at the feet of Bottle Alley Glass, a company that takes unwanted glass bottles and gives them a new lease of life. The awards have been made from recycled bottle glass fused into new glass sheets. The Awards are cut and polished before the Surface Design logo is engraved on the front. Surface Design Awards 2013 will take place on Thursday 7th February at the Business Design Centre, London.
