tournament qualification once and for all. “With a population of only four million, it is
obviously going to be very tough to compete with other major nations and qualify for a major tournament. “There are other hurdles to negotiate apart
from physical or tactical issues; there are psychological burdens on the Welsh as we have never qualified for a major tournament. If we qualify once we will repeat it. The trick is qualifying the first time. It is not easy but doable. “Qualification for the World Cup is now in the hands of Belgium and Croatia. There are still six games to go so everything is all to play for but if we finish well it’ll set things up nicely for the qualifiers for Euro 2016.”
We had no money; I went out there by myself and had Greek staff. I did everything myself and it has improved my ability as a coach
It was tough in Greece.
Coleman does admit that the transition from club management has been a tough one and he has missed the day-to-day interaction with the players. “As an international manager you meet up with the players, play one or two games and then lose them again. You can’t work on what has gone right and wrong. It is something I have struggled to come to terms with and I am still struggling with it to tell you the truth. “I do miss the training ground interaction with
the players but that is something that is going to get easier with time.” Some sections of the media have questioned
the credentials of the Welsh team and have simply labelled Wales as the “Gareth Bale show”. Coleman however insists that Wales as a unit have far more to offer and the potential is there for the future. “Some sections of the media have been critical of us in being too reliant on Gareth Bale yet other media commentators have suggested that this is the golden generation of Welsh footballers. They both can’t be right! “The fact is that we have one of the most
exciting players on the planet in Gareth Bale. It is a good problem to deal with and we have some terrific other footballers. The lads have a great team spirit and don’t let it affect them. SGB
