Twitter- the great bastion of free speech or pretentious waffl e for troublemakers?

I have to confess that I have been a bit of a Twitter ‘addict’ in the

past. Whiling away a few minutes by reading Joey Barton’s hilarious attempts at being the next Friedrich Nietzsche is almost as enjoyable as listening to his French Scouse accent.

All too oſt en however, society’s lust for the ‘cult of the celebrity’ is depressingly familiar. I might be a bit of a maverick in this day and age but to be honest, I don’t really want to know that Rio Ferdinand is currently taking a dump or that Cheryl Cole has the best fans in the world.

I think the most worrying thing of all is that the site allows individuals to get a little brave. The racist abuse of Stan Collymore was disgraceful but Twitter also allows for unsubstantiated claims to be made. Only last week, my club Charlton Athletic were embroiled in ‘Twittergate’ controversy aſt er Emmanuel Frimpong and Danny Haynes accused Millwall fans of racist abuse. Their accusations were later retracted.

This doesn’t sit well with me at all. Whilst Millwall fans may or may not have chanted racist abuse, this is not the issue here. The correct procedure would have been to report the allegations through the offi cial channels but now, as with many allegations that we have seen posted on Twitter, damaging claims are made without thought on the consequences. If we are not careful we will have the ‘boy who cried wolf’ scenario in many instances.

Twitter is an excellent news resource and has certainly changed the dynamics of journalism forever; we just need to see some responsibility from those that people are keen to aspire to. Some food for thought at least!

Speaking of food, see you in January where this column will no doubt touch upon the inevitable renewal of the gym membership! Merry Christmas to you all and a prosperous New Year.

Be Lucky. Alex Fordham, EDITOR
