EDITOR’S NOTE

A refreshing change Sometimes, it’s time to move on. Business is rarely a place for sentiment. As one of the first and most-recognisable Internet brands, eBay has built up considerable goodwill and recognition for its logo. But despite that, aſter 17 years, the company felt it was time for a change. Tis year, eBay, Microsoſt and Twitter have all changed their logos, even when there didn’t seem to be much wrong with the old versions.

So why the changes, and why now? In this issue, we talk to Alex Von Schirmeister, vice president of marketing at eBay Marketplaces Europe, about the rationale behind eBay’s new logo, and compare it to other brands that have done the same.

Te BBC has been under considerable scrutiny of late for a variety of reasons. But whatever its current problems, they don’t detract from the fact that the company’s online offering remains almost unparalleled. We speak to Diane Hamer, who works on trademarks for the broadcaster, about the challenges of managing, promoting and protecting the BBC’s assets online. Hamer also tells us about rights protection mechanisms under ICANN’s new gTLD programme—the BBC has applied for a new gTLD, but there are questions still to answer, she says.

Akram Atallah, chief operating officer at ICANN, also talks to us about some of the concerns surrounding rights protection and about the timeline for launching new gTLDs. And with ICANN chief executive Fedi Chehadé recently proposing amendments to the Trademark Clearinghouse model under the programme, it’s clear that IP concerns remain front and centre for the organisation, even if it’s difficult to please everyone. As Atallah puts it, “the model is all about compromise for everybody”.

One of the difficulties of operating on the Internet is the pace of change. New business models are constantly emerging. Just keeping up can be a challenge. For our (now) regular Snapshot column, we take a look at Wefunder, an Internet business that links start-ups with investors to offer opportunities for new companies to get off the ground.

And while we’re talking about the Internet, now seems a good time to mention the upcoming revamp of our website (and that of our sister publication, World IP Review). By the time the next issue of this magazine is published, we’ll have substantially increased our online offering on TB&I and WIPR.

I hope you’ll find the new set-up useful, and wish you a relaxing holiday season. Peter Scott, Editor
