A Step Forward
Advocating effectively is not only about what is being said but also about how many people are saying it. MOAA is updating its membership structure to maximize the strength of its advocacy.

MOAA is a leader because we’ve always been mindful of our membership numbers. We are at our core a membership organization. Nothing is more important to me than learning what’s important to you. In thousands of interactions since I’ve been at MOAA, one thought is repeated often: We need to attract new, younger members.

To me and to MOAA’s board and staff, the question has become not what to do but how to do it. Our name change helped keep us strong. We believe it’s not only the right thing to serve our younger, active duty members and spouses but also a priority for remaining a relevant advocate.

We’ll take another step forward Jan. 1 by offering three categories of membership, instead of the two that currently exist. Young officers and their families can sample MOAA by joining as Basic members. They will participate in advocacy efforts and use a limited number of association services at no fee.

The full range of benefits will be reserved for our committed, dues-paying members, desiginated Premium. Our Life members will remain the pinnacle of membership, MOAA’s servant leaders.

When you call in or visit MOAA’s Web Base Jan. 1, you will have to take the easy, additional step of logging in to get to MOAA-protected content. Material you will access there is the same high-quality MOAA content to which you are accustomed, including printed material.

We plan to connect better with the next generation of MOAA members and serve them well while they serve us, creating bonds to draw them into our Premium and Life categories when the time is right.

We also want to provide better value for core members who continue to invest in MOAA through their dues. New products and services are being developed that will provide better value for you and encourage Basic members to upgrade to Premium or Life memberships.

The new changes in membership will be interrelated at all levels with sustaining and growing the chapter system. With a bigger base, new incentives, and the use of powerful communication technologies, we have outstanding opportunities to connect with each other.

In order to keep improving, we’ll ask for your feedback. We know it’s important to change so we can remain influential advocates. It’s a worthwhile, high-stakes journey we’ll take together.

During this season of celebration, I feel blessed to be among many of our nation’s finest citizens and to lead MOAA into this new and exciting era.

Please keep our troops and their families in your thoughts. Judy and I send all of you our best wishes for the year ahead!

— Vice Adm. Norbert R. Ryan Jr., USN (Ret)
