‘Tis the Season
With the holiday season in full swing, Military Officer celebrates the seasons of giving and new beginnings with stories about funding education, advancing military research, and more.
In December, we celebrate many seasons — the seasons of giving, of new beginnings, and of optimism as we head forward into a new year.
In this spirit, we bring you the feature “Cultivating the Future,” page 56, in which Janet Farley takes a look at MOAA’s commitment to help military children over-come some of the financial obstacles to higher education through our scholarship fund. Over the past 65 years, more than 12,000 children from military families have been provided financial assistance for their undergraduate studies through the MOAA Scholarship Fund. And it is the generous giving of MOAA’s membership that has enabled the scholarship fund to continue making a difference for those students. I encourage you to consider helping to lead the way into the future with a contribution to the MOAA Scholarship Fund.
The future those students will help shape is sure to be challenging and filled with uncertainty. But several groups of researchers are trying to look ahead to make sure our armed forces maintain the advantage. In “Front Lines of Research,” page 60, Mark Cantrell explores the efforts of our military research laboratories to look into the future and “bring the impossible to life.”
Some of the technology those researchers might develop surely will end up in the hands of our warriors on the battlefield. Although the equipment they have available to them is important, it is their mental and physical training and preparation that might make the difference to their survival in the field. Don Vaughan visited the Army Special Forces School to see firsthand how today’s servicemembers prepare to “Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape,” page 50.
Unfortunately, December also brings on the wintry weather and flu season. So we asked Marilyn Pribus to give us the facts about the flu and how we can protect ourselves — and others — from this annual ritual of fevers, aches, and pains. Check out “Fend Off the Flu,” page 66.
As 2012 comes to a close, I want to remind you MOAA’s One Powerful Voice® is made possible and most effective when the voices of its members are speaking in concert with one another. Military Officer is committed to getting you the facts you need to be an effective part of the conversation. That information is available to you not only in the pages of Military Officer but also online at
www.moaa.org and through email products such as the Legislative Update and the MOAA News Exchange®. Please, take a few minutes to make sure we have your email address by updating your member profile online at
